Carilion LifeGuard 10 & Ambulances

LifeGuard 10 and 11 are dispatched on 155.385 CTCSS of 118.8 and the ground units are on 156.240 CTCSS of 123.0 There is also a ambulance repeater in the Roanoke area on 463.625 (I believe) and the CTCSS is 156.7, I think its Carilion but I cannot confirm that.
Here is a run down of how the ground units go:
100 Roanoke
200 Roanoke
300 Giles
400 Lexington
500 Radford

The repeater on 156.24 is up on Por Mountain and I have heard units calling from Tazewell
County, I am assuming thru Poor Mtn, not sure if they have other repeaters or not. I havent seen any licensed if they do.

Hope that helps

David:

Can I assume that when Pegasus files down there that they use 155.385, and is that a repeater or simplex? I know I hear Lifeguard 10 coming to UVA a lot using the Med9 repeater on Carter's Mtn. I know thet from a few thousand feet they have no problem talking most of the way to Danville and Roanoke when Pegasus flies down there. There is also a Med9 repeater on Elliot's Knob in Augusta which is 4000 high that UVA can hit with their base, as well as Med10 on Massanutten.

Carilion / Lifeguard 10

Yes, LifeGuard 10 and 11, Pegasus, MedFlight III, even those out of NC (AirCare from NC Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, Life Flight out of Duke University, and TarHeel 1 out of UNC Chapel Hill) switch over to each others frequencies when they are assisting or in the area. I have heard LifeFlight uses a Med channel repeater, probably Med 9 since Bedford County dispatches or simulcast over Med 10, have you heard any of their traffic? I have a dificult time hearing the Med 9 repeater from the Lynchburg area.
The Carilion frequency for LifeGuard 10 and 11 is not repeated, simplex only. I recently talked to a LG10 pilot, he shoulded me the frequency book, it was a three ringed binder and it had every VA county, and bordering WV and NC counties information. INformation for sheriff, police, fire and ems, even some public works stuff. The helicopters from every location I mentioned above have presets, already programmed in the radio, and they can also select any frequency needed just in case they dont already have them. MedFlight III typically switches to the statewide EMS frequency when approaching a scene, not always, but usually. That freq is 155.205 carrier squelch. I volunteer for the Brosville Fire & Rescue in Pittsylvania County (Station/Squad 37), former assistant chief there, the last LZ (Landind zone) class we had was for MedFlight, and the statewide frequency idea was what they suggested, and its really a great idea. Every agency is suppose to have "205" and most do, so why not use it instead of a primary dispatch channel.

I hear LG10 and 11 all the time on their dispatch channel ... I'm only 35 miles from Roanoke where that tower is so I can here them (dispatch) pretty clear ... back when I was an LT with a volunteer EMS agency and we did an LZ training LG10 got the dispatch on thier frequency and then when they got close to the LZ they actually switched to our area's primary EMS channel and that was how we communicated with them ...... and I've seen the binder, its crazy how many frequencies they have programmed into their radio ... just my 2cents :)

It is interesting that they are recommending 155.205. Yes it is supposed to be a "statewide EMS" channel but best I can tell the state never bothered to license it as such. There are a few localities and others around with licenses but those I have seen are all for limited numbers of mobiles only. So under what authority are all these rescue squads and VSP operating on that frequency? The Commonwealth has a license (VDEM) but it is only for 100 mobiles.

You are correct John on the licensing issue, alot of agencies have failed to properly license this frequency and the HEAR channel, 155.340.

Just another 2 cents--- around here they 99% use the locals fire or rescue freq at the LZ. I have heard some use of 155.205 over near Fredericksburg.

BTW, Pegasus now uses an APRS system when in range of UVA MedComm instead of voice position reports. Anybody else using that? It isn't on the MED9 channel, I can't say I've heard data on there. I know a few years ago they tested some of the local hams' APRS gear to see how it worked but it was only for testing since it isn't flight certified.

Here in the Richmond Area I can't recall any time I've heard Med Flight on 155.205. When there is an incident here in Chesterfield County, I've always heard them communicate with the Chesterfield units on their Countywide frequency, 153.965. I have heard Med Flight on other EOC frequencies like 155.895 though. I'll have to keep a listen to see if any other counties use 155.205 to communicate with Med Flight. It'd be great to get the frequencies that MedFlight uses to communicate to each individual agency.

The MedFlight helicopter patches to Chesterfield on the old Countywide channel. Everywhere else, they co-ordinate with LZ contact on EMS Statewide, 155.2050.
I hear them on this freq quite often.
Usually the mission info is sent out over "EOC ch 1" 155.895R. Va EOC then will advise the MedFlight crew of ground contact info, i.e.- freq to use and then unit ID of the ground contact (ex. "Prince George Engine 260, Claremont Fire 300, etc").
Generally, contact will be established over EMS Statewide in the outlying counties and cities. I have heard them contact Hanover and Henrico fire ground units on EMS Statewide, but am at a loss as to which freq they contact Richmond on.They probably dont have much call to go into Richmond as there's not much advantage over RASI ground units transporting to MCV there in town. They generally wont have direct access to a trunked system given the nature of the radio they carry on board. IIRC, it's a Wulfsburg radio that is freq agile, but conventional only.

As a sidenote, VSP aircraft, to include all the MedFlight "brand" aircraft do not have STARS radios installed...yet.
