Can anyone confirm reception of Carolina Beach or Kure Beach on the New Hanover County System?

I was at Carolina Beach last May, and I could receive Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, UNCW and Pleasure Island. I had all the Carolina and Kure Beach talkgroups loaded, but I did not get a single hit.

I also had the old VHF-HI and UHF frequencies for Carolina Beach, but no hits on those either.

I plan to go back to Carolina Beach, and I was wondering if anyone has had better luck hearing Carolina Beach or Kure Beach.

Thank you

Larry

Right now, they are active on the nhc p25 network. Who knows for how much longer since the sheriffs and ilm police that use the same system have gone encrypted .

Carolina Beach/Kure Beach Summer 2014

Right now, they are active on the nhc p25 network. Who knows for how much longer since the sheriffs and ilm police that use the same system have gone encrypted .

To compliment OFT, Here is a list:

Carolina Beach PD and Kure Beach PD can be found ONLY on New Hanover P25 talkgroup 33290.
This talk group is not encrypted at this moment but they can talk on secondary talk group which is.

Carolina Beach PD units are 6-XX units and Kure Beach PD are KB-XX units. You also may here here Fort Fisher Ranger units 3-XX.

Also being tourist season Carolina Beaches Ocean Rescue can be found on talk group 33248.
And Kure Beach Ocean Rescue on talk group 33282. I also have talk group 33293 listed as Lifeguards down in that region.

Yes, there is other talk groups listed on the forum page that are listed for Carolina Beach area talk groups. Those are not used at this time and when they are, there are people affiliated to talk group by accident and then keyup.

The locals will tell you down there, don't use sunscreen and carry a case of cheap beer with you wherever you walk. Bonus points if you make your ol lady carry it with your pool stick. Marlboro Reds smoking and public drunkenness is encouraged. A cut-off flannel makes a good blanket at the beach.

Hope this helps,

Thank you!

Thanks for the replies. I knew the RR forum would have the answer.

I did hear the ocean rescue and lifeguard talkgroups, but I was monitoring the 3324_ talkgroups for the PD.

I will add 33290 to my CLB scan list.

Again, thank you very much.

Larry:

Don't forget to go to the boardwalk, grab a Britt's doughnut and ride the bumpercars. Yes, what Central_IL said is indeed true along with the lifeguard talkgroups are very active this summer.

Keep these in your scanner too . The FD & EMS use PS 3 the most ,but they do use others when things are busy.

CB state park uses 159.420 131.8.

Kure Beach update

I'm back form the beach, and here is what I heard:

New Hanover County Trunk Talkgroups
33290 Kure / Carolina Beach PD <76 hits>
33248 Carolina Beach Lifeguards <32 hits>
33004 PS3 Fire Dept. (Carolina Beach?) <26 hits>
33010 PS 9 Public Utility? <24 hits>
33332 ILM airport <17 hits>
33282 Kure Beach Lifeguards <16 hits>
33005 PS 4 EMS <5 hits>
33009 PS8 ? <5 hits>
33006 PS5 EMS <4 hits>
33007 PS6 ? <1 hit>
33011 PS10 ? <1 hit>

Conventional
159.4200 CLB State Park <56 hits>
163.1375 USCG 113 <8 hits>
156.4000 Beach Umbrella Sales <7 hits>
171.2375 USCG 127 <4 hits>
162.0500 USCG 108 <2 hits>
412.9750 USCG 409 <1 hits>

I had all the Kure Beach and Carolina Beach talkgroups listed in the data base loaded, but had no hits on any of the others.

My PSR-500 with the antenna attached would just fit diagonally into a gallon size Ziplock bag for scanning on the beach. I could even operate the volume and squelch through the plastic.

Britt's Doughnuts are delicious!

I hope this isn't too far off topic, but never having owned/seen a PSR-500, I'm curious how you maintained your hit counts. Does it have an analyze feature or maybe connected to a small laptop?

Understood, I have more scanner software than I need. I was curious because he had his scanner in a gallon freezer bag and it didn't occur to me that he would have had a laptop, or similar, on the beach.

Hit Counter on PSR-500

Hi,

No, I didn't have a laptop with me.

The PSR-500 has a hit count feature, but it requires that you navigate to each object and scroll through about half a dozen menus to view the hit count. Way too slow.

When I got home from the beach, I uploaded the data file from the PSR-500 scanner into my PSREdit500 software. I love this program.

Then I went into the scan list and sorted on the hit count column from most to least.

This is really handy for checking out frequencies while you are away from the scanner. You can just put in the frequencies, turn on the scanner, and come back later to see if there has been any activity.

When I was in Kure Beach in July, I didn't hear any PD traffic. Now I realize why - I had downloaded the talkgroups categorized under Kure Beach and Carolina Beach, but not Pleasure Island. I didn't realize their dispatch channels weren't under the town names. I saw "primary" channels under the town names, and thought that was what I wanted.

Kinda bummed that I didn't know then what I know now.
