So I recently came across a few DMR control channels that seem to belong to the Carolina Connect DMR system (152.0525 and 454.625). I can find licenses for some of the UHF sites down in the Charlotte area, but there is absolutely nothing that I can find for most of the other sites. For instance, I get a fairly good signal form site 35 on 152.0525, but putting that frequency into the ULS on returns two licenses for that frequency for the entire US, none of which are for this system. Where could these other site's licenses be hiding? That would be a big help in locating and mapping out the rest of the system.

Also, any idea of how active this system is or who uses it? It seems to be a fairly wide-area system, but I'm not hearing much of any voice traffic and nothing is in the DB besides Meckelnburg School TGs.

Anybody have any ideas? Thanks!

P.S. -- Looking at some notes from a few weeks ago, it seems that I was hearing the 454.625 site (site 12) well in Downtown Winston-Salem. I have in my notes that I was getting hits on TG 11034 (also coming across the Cool Springs Site) and TG 3003.

Found a coverage map for the system... very wide-area indeed.

Interesting coverage pattern into Virginia. Wonder if there's a site on Sauratown?

It seems like there might be. I did a search for all licenses on Sauratown Mountain and didn't see anything that looked like it was part of Carolina Connect. For some reason, it is near impossible to find their licenses' except for the Charlotte-area sites. Very peculiar....

It's a cover-up . . . a conspiracy . . . we're all at risk now for mentioning it.
That's sarcasm for those who may not recognize it. [emoji16]
I'm actually in that little sliver of white, north of Greensboro, so maybe I'm safe.

On the sites around here that have been identified, I have found a number of talkgroups in the past few days. They have been received on the Winston-Salem and/or the Cool Springs site:

TG 3003 - Is a construction company working at what sounded like a large job near/at a nuclear power plant. Units were being sent back to various cities after the job such as Hickory and Mooresville.

TG 3014 - Transportation in the Statesville, NC area. There isn't a ton of traffic so I can't ID a specific agency yet.

TG 10485 - Unknown

TG 11034 - Davidson County, NC school buses.

I have submitted the identified TGs to the database.

Talkgroup 11034 is what I believe to be the Lexington City school system based on the names of the schools I've heard mentioned. It's a separate system from Davidson County and they run their own buses.

Ah I didn't know that's how they did it there. In most of the other counties around here its just one county-wide system.

Thanks for the info!

I believe this is a concrete company. I heard Blythe Construction mentioned but I'm unsure if it was their trucks or working for them.

I was able to confirm site 12 & site 35 are in fact on Sauratown Mtn. I also picked up a voice channel on the VHF site with 152.7425 as LCN 2. I'll have that added to the database in the next few days.

What I don’t understand about this system is where the licenses are? I can find them for the Charlotte area sites, but not for the other ones. For instance, a search for the confirmed CC for the Sauratown Mountain site (152.0525), returns zero licenses for the whole state. Same for the voice frequency.

Is there another place/way I should look for their licenses?

Can anyone confirm the usage of TG 6020? I heard Amtrack mentioned and several locations throughout the triad. I know they also do buses so I'm thinking it might be that. Need to do some more listening though. That TG comes across the VHF Sauratown Mountain site, and as of now, is the only TG I've heard on the VHF site. The UHF site does not carry this TG.

A few other ones I've heard that I'll throw out here:

  • 110 - Should be Charlotte area school buses based on TG range
  • 3018 - Sounds like possibly a stone/construction company
  • 10442 - “truck driver” - construction?
  • 10443 - Similar traffic to above
  • 10485 - ?
