As of three days ago. I get minimal activity on the Cary side, and little to no activity on the Wake side. I don't think Simulcast is the issue. Because they were both fine three days ago. Any ideas? TIA

I don't get a lot of useful activity on the Cary side anyway because a lot of what's on the Cary side is encrypted, at least for law. But I do still hear things on both sides. I haven't noticed a particular drop within the past couple of days or anything though. Are you sure your squelch didn't get bumped?

I am laughing, because I always forget the ever trusty Squelch.

@BCasto lately I've been thinking about this and am kind of thinking the same thing. I've been considering not monitoring the Cary side any more because I think you're right, most of the action is on the county system, and the Cary system doesn't seem to have much that's useful (that's not carried on the other side anyway).

I am still miffed about their encryption that has spread to my home town of Morrisville. Did you see the dustup in Chicago about their move to encryption? wow..

I think it's sad that agencies don't seem to understand the value of having the public be aware of what's going on. They see it like it's always a bad thing, but I would argue everyone is better off in most cases if the public is aware of what's happening.

You're right though, the move to encryption seems like a contagion that spreads to surrounding communities a lot. I understand it for certain things, but personally I think there should be a very good reason for doing it before they do, and there should be strict accountability procedures in place if they use encrypted channels. They are a public agency, that data shouldn't be hidden. I understand (and appreciate) the need for officer safety, and have relatives on the law enforcement side. I get it. But the public right to be informed is hugely important to all of us if we're going to exist in a free society.

Anyway not to get too far off topic because I know they don't like discussion of that on here normally, so I'll leave it at that. But I think Morrisville and Apex went that way because they're controlled by the same folks who run the Cary side, so the people in charge pushed it.

Encryption isn't going away. Especially in this day and time. There is no case law that will support any kind of demand to make an agency turn it off. So far, every lawsuit that I know of has been thrown out.

Morrisville went encrypted because they switched to the Cary core and have a CAM (Cary/Apex/Morrisville) contract/agreement now. Happened in 2018, and you can find the entire report online why Morrisville and Apex moved to Cary.

That's a really interesting doc. Thanks for sharing that! It makes me think I'm wrong about the way the Wake system is set up though. I always thought the system had two sides that shared a data center, similar to Durham/Fayetteville, but after reading some of that I doubt they share anything. They seem to be directly competing with each other and Cary has ambitions of taking over all of Wake County from the way that doc is written. Am I seeing that right?

While trying to Google the doc(I haven't been able to find it), I came across this report out of Chicago:

Near the end of the report, it mentions a bunch of cities in the U.S. that have encrypted their PD. But Palo Alto(CA) has unencrypted their radio traffic.

@Chris0516 Its a public facing document, you just need to know what words to use:

2017-237-0_ATTH_01_Emergency_Communications_Feasibility_Study_Agreement.pdf (legistarweb-production.s3.amazonaws.com)

@bfknoll I can't speak on the tech side of the Wake System, but I can tell you that from what I read these three agencies were not happy with how RWECC was handling call volume so they all left. Cary isn't trying to take over anything, they were just the ones who had the biggest amount of money to be able to start the exit process. There are only 3-4 PSAP's in Wake County I believe, Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs, and maybe someone else, and you get a lot of benefits (and $$) for being a PSAP.

I found a way for me to hear Cary/Wake25, but. It doesn't make sense why, I would have to do it with Cary/Wake25. When I don't have to do that with other systems'. On my 436HP, I select my Favorites List as the only list to scan. Then in my Favorites List, I set all the TG's of the other systems' to 'Avoid'. Why should I have to do that to hear Cary/Wake25?
