The city of Castroville, located in Medina County, is planning to implement a new digital, VHF-High band TRS. The application is currently pending before the FCC. Does anyone know if this new system will become part of the Austin P25, wide-area network?

Castroville is quite a ways from Austin, but then someone linked the Austin system with Eagle Pass, so I guess anything is possible.

I can't really think of a reason for them to be part of Austin's system unless they are trying to make an updated system like "STARNET" around Houston.

Medina County Public Safety Trunked System – Unknown Type Digital Emissions
Sheriff Site: Repeater Outputs: 155.5275 155.7825 155.8125 155.8950 155.9325
WQEU654 Repeater Inputs: 158.8875 158.9025 158.9325 158.9625 159.0375

Natalia Site: Repeater Outputs: 155.5725 155.7975 158.8275
WQEZ337 Repeater Inputs: 154.6575 154.7175 154.7775

D’Hanis Site: Repeater Outputs: 155.0175 155.0775
WQEZ464 Repeater Inputs: 155.6175 155.6325

Mico Site: Repeater Outputs: 155.1375 155.1975
WQFG832 Repeater Inputs: 155.6775 155.6925

I have had these on my personal database for sometime now. I have been trying to catch a ride with a buddy that drives trucks to Del Rio frequently to try and see if any of this is active. All four current active licenses are at least six months old, and all are YW-Public Safety Trunked and digital. I guess since Medina County touches some neighboring counties that are part of the Middle Rio Grande system, the systems could be one and the same after build-out.

According to the FCC Database, the Sheriff site WQEU654 and D'Hanis WQEZ464, have sent in paperwork that their sites are completed and should be online. However, Mico and Natalia have yet to acknowledge that construction is completed, and are coming up on their one year deadline, or they have to file for an extension. That being said, I think a signal safari to this area might yield some rather interesting results within the next 90 days. It will be interesting to see who soon Castroville can get their system online, especially when it's approved by the FCC.

On a related note, the city of Natalia submitted a construction confirmation that their system is finished and should be online. It might be interesting to scan their frequencies and see if any data channel is online yet or not?

Anyone hear any more of this?

I was talking to a relative (who works for Medina SO) and he mentioned how poor his coverage is near Hondo. I asked him if they recently got new radios, and he said yes, so I would imagine at least part of the system is in. Apparently it's not all in, or he just doesn't know how to change sites (or the radios are programmed for it yet).

Anyone been down that way to see what sites are online? There isn't anything in the db with info yet....

I heard some fellow on another board talking about what I believe was Medina County. He said that his neighboring county uses a VHF P25 system, and their's is LTR. So.....It could actually be a VHF LTR system, passport maybe? There are a few possibilities, but it would be unrealistic to think that with some towers only having two frequencies each that is would be P25 Smartzone system. Unless they pooled their frequencies together to run just two towers. I think I saw a fellow up at fire school in the next section from me from Castroville VFD. Maybe I'll catch him tomorrow.
