Can anyone help me with programming Cattaraugus county's p25 system into a pro 2096 ? I currently monitor with a Uniden bcd996p2 without any issues. I've had this pro 2096 for around 3 years now and never really figured out the programming tricks. This is my first RadioShack scanner as I grew up using exclusively uniden scanners. RadioShack software and programming is completely foreign to me but I would like to lean if some can help I would greatly appreciate it. I've been told that this is one of the better older models to own but as I stated I know very little about these units. Thanks..

i am more familiar with 700 and 800 Mhz systems and simulcast problems.
but it could be that the radio shack is having problems with it.
and do you have base freq, offset and step ?

Further to wtp's comment, it is essential you enter this into the Custom table for it to trunktrack. This can be accomplished by hand but if you have software, that's even better. I owned a Pro-2096 around 20 years ago and needed to do this for a VHF system with 3 band plans.

P25 Channel ID Table
CH ID Type Base (MHz) Spacing (KHz) Transmit Offset (MHz)
1---- FDMA 851.00625 6.25------------ -45
7---- FDMA 136.00500 10-------------- -39
8---- FDMA 136.00500 10--------------- +14.7
9---- FDMA 136.00750 12.5------------- +16.75
10--- FDMA 136.00000 10-------------- +32.7
11--- FDMA 139.53000 7.5------------- +40.275
12--- FDMA 150.09000 2.5------------- -0.9

For VHF/UHF additional steps must be set as follows:
1. Press PGM
2. Press TRUNK
3. Press FUNC + 2
4. Key in the Base freq then ENTer
5. Key in the 3 digit Offset then ENTer
6. Using the up/down, find the correct Step on line 4, then ENTer
7. Press FUNC + 3 for 3600 CC Mode or FUNC + 4 for 9600 CC Mode
8. Using the up/down, find the correct setting on line 4, usually Table, then ENTer
Press SCAN

The first thing you should do is check your decode rate on your control channel frequency to see if it will even decode the simulcast well enough to try.

Navigate to your control channel frequency. It should say "MO" in the top right corner. If it switches between "MO" and "DG" repeatedly or sits on "DG" for more than a couple seconds, then it's game over.

If it does make it past the digital detection and show "96:xxxxx yy%" with x representing anything and yy representing decode rate, you need to watch the decode rate carefully. Anything underneath 60% is fairly useless. Since it is a single site Motorola P25 system, your decode rate should ideally be up in the 90's. If the X's do show anything other than dashes, they should rotate about every second or so between "SY892" (System ID), "T0101" (Tower ID in hex), and "BEE00" (WACN).

Simulcast is not the PRO-96's strong suit, and the same could probably be said for the 2096.

I'm using butel arc 96 for software. The decode percentage is alternating from mid 90's to as low as 16% at times. I was afraid that simulcast distortion was a possibility as my 996 had the same issue up until just recently until I made some adjustments to my antenna setup. I will follow the steps provided and see if this helps me at all.
Thank you everyone for the guidance. Your help is much appreciated.

Could you possibly explain how I enter the offsets into the system correctly? I have Win 96 and arc96 pro. I am unable to enter negative numbers or decimals. The frequencies you provided do match what my 996p2 has in it for the band plan. unfortunately I have never had to deal with offsets before. Programming this radio is still new to me but I definitely would like to learn. I entered the frequencies for which provided without the offset and it does hit on 155.775 from time to time with voice so I must be getting close. Thanks for the help.

Geez, I sold that radio many moons ago. Are you prompted for an Offset? Otherwise, I would say leave it at 0 (zero). I wish I could help more.

Yes but I can try just leaving it set to zero. Which program would you recommend? Also when programming the custom band plan do you know what the high and low channel should be set at?

I never owned programming in those days. I put the figures from the band plan into the band plan editor of Freescan. Untitled.jpg

I used the Auto Upper feature for it to calculate the Upper Frequency. If you notice the last two band plans, they are not 7.5 or 2.5 step. That does not exist in Freescan programming. I used multiples of 7.5 x2= 15.0 and 2.5 x2=5.0

Kind of a hack job, but I hope this might work for you. It would be nice if other Pro-96 or 2096 owners could chime in.

Okay cool. That makes perfect sense actually. I'm surprised I didn't think to do that to calculate the upper frequencies because I have been using free scan for many years . I Never actually had to enter this information manually though. I will get right on this. I'm thinking you just solved my problem man. I have been tinkering with it all morning and have been getting more voice traffic than ever before but it's also apparent that I have been missing transmissions as well.
I appreciate you helping me out. I generally don't post anything on forums because I see a lot of shrewd comments posted in response to people who ask simple questions. Thank you for working with me.

I don't participate too much on the forums either, but that is because I usually "referee" the Canadian forums. I do more reading than writing!

I thought I would jump in on this topic as I had much the same problem back in 2002 and I thought I could help in some way, however small.

Although I don't have a '2096, that's very helpful info. Tyvm

I know what you mean. I do much reading myself. Thank you again for helping me out with this. You have answered all of my questions in regards to programming this and I do appreciate it. Now I understand. Next time I want to add a system to this unit I'll know what I'm doing.

The offsets are just your CH LO number IIRC.

The PRO96Com manual has some information on how to create your own bandplans from scratch, wouldn't be a bad idea to take a look at that.
