• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Greetings all. This is my first time posting here as I am new to radios.

Forgive me if this question has been asked but I am trying to set up a base antenna. I placed the antenna on a deck attached to my house and was curious if the house may be messing with the signal quality. My concern is the wall may be reflecting back signals and causing 'interference'

Thanks in Advance!

things like aluminum siding, electrical conduit in the house--basically anything metallic--will have an effect on the signal. That's one of several reasons why it's best to mount an antenna as high as possible (if memory serves 20' above the roof if mounted to the house is legal limit). (The other reason is to get above the "ground clutter" (hence the adage "height is might").

I suspect I may need to break down and buy a proper base station... It's just a little magnetic mount I was trying to rig with a large metal plate underneath... Thanks

Start reading some books prior to spending your money. If you're impatient, buy a 5/8 wave antenna. If you are using a 23 channel vs. a 40 channel, I suggest the yellow pages in your local phone book. Look up pyschotherapists and take your pick,/choice of candy. Seriously why waste your time.

Anything that's between your antenna and the radio you're trying to listen or transmit to can degrade the signal. That includes trees, power lines, buildings, etc. Some are worse than others.

A99 seems to be a commonly recommended basic base antenna.

Getting the antenna up high, and above the house, will help. Make sure you address lightning protection, grounding and properly waterproofing all your outdoor coaxial cable connections.

What are the dimensions of the plate? With 27 MHz, it needs a large diameter.

I was looking at mmckenna' signature...I had to chuckle. Got to have humor in these crappy times

Yeah, he hates everything, just like in the Life cereal commercials of the '70s. Mmckenna's first intial is M Just like Mikey. Has anyone ever seen them in the same room? Not that I've heard. Coincidence? Maybe.........

(Sorry mmckenna, I couldn't help myself)

Hy-Gain Penetrator 5/8 wave antenna for cb radio and amateur radio... It runs about $150, and it's worth it... Something simpler and easy to put together, is the Antron 99, I think it costs around $100 without the ground plane kit..

Ancient proverb: "You get what you pay for". In other words, if you buy cheap you'll most likely be disappointed and/or frustrated with the results.
