• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

wanting opinion on Cb. ball mounts? I've read or watched a video on used ball mounts being better than new one's? is that correct? I know they don't make lots of things like they used to, but in this case its an old electronic devise?, so how could that be better than new?

Not really "electronic", as there are no components inside it. It's just a mount.

Depends on what you buy.
The good ones are stainless steel. The cheap knockoffs are chrome plated.

As long as the insulators are in good shape and there's no obvious damage, one of the better quality older ball mounts would be fine. But not really any reason not to buy a similar quality new one.

Not many manufacturers anymore. I know they are out there, so you'll have to do some digging.

This whip won't be long enough for CB, but here's an appropriate mount:

Over the last 50yrs or so I've probably had every ball mount made from Hustler to A/S to Motorola and everything in between. The best I've seen so far for a "regular size" ball mount is one sold by Motorola for the Micom HF radios. The ball is a black coated casting but the insulator is machined out of a solid chunk of black Rexolite and part of the insulator protrudes past the mounting hole for good high voltage arc protection. This mount will handle a lot of power and the insulator will last a lifetime. They were expensive new but can be found on Ebay occasionally for a good price. I believe the part # is TRN4505A and it was part of either the FAD-1400 or TAA-1000 antenna system.

My second favorite is the regular Motorola ball mount with stainless steel ball and grey plastic insulator.

It seems in the 1970s and maybe into the 80s there were more ball mounts to choose from and I think those from major mfrs were of better quality back then. I've run across more crappy quality ones in the last 20yrs than in the 70s.

Here is a pic of the Motorola/Mobat/Micom ball mount.

Motorola/Mobat/Micom ball mount. I had one on my Dodge W100 4wd truck. Never had any problems with those 'ball mounts'.
