• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If all you want to do is talk a few miles down the road pick up a Cobra 29. That radio comes in different versions and all versions work well.
Next you will need some good quality American made coax, a good antenna and a way to mount the antenna. I'm not sure exactly what you're driving but I'm going to assume you operate a big rig truck. Since the tractors' cabs now are mostly composite / fiberglass... i.e. other than metal grounding the antenna is very important and should not be overlooked. Do you want a co-phased antenna set up or just a single antenna set up? the coax will differ depending on what you choose.
There is so much info out there. I recommend the Firestik.com site. There is a technical section there that uses lay terms and eases off the geek speak. Good luck to you. Glad to hear you are getting back into the hobby.

If you can find an older Cobra 29 or Uniden PC76 or PC78, they are the workhorses. If you can find a reputable tech to go through it, that's about the best bang for the buck. Add good coax, and something like a Wilson trucker antenna; and you should have no issues getting the results you're looking for.

What is a good coax?

For single antenna mobile, some decent belden RG8X, if you want to co-phase, you need 75ohm cable. GR6 is good for that. (provided you are going to run barefoot. GR6 doesn't like high power).

Make sure you search for a reputable tech if you go that route. ..there are a lot that say they're a tech that couldn't tune a radio correctly if their life depended on it. I only know of a handful that are worth anything.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (Android 2.3.4; Linux; Opera Mobi/ADR-1309251116) Presto/2.11.355 Version/12.10)

If you're in southern Michigan, the guy inside the TA at the 167, on I-94 has a good reputation.

I have had excellent results from Snake Radio Customs. Look it up on the Interweb. The tech does solid work and I have set up all my friends with radios.
