I have yet another antenna question for everyone........ 8)

I recently bought a Base CB radio and I need a decent Base Antenna.
I would like to get a high quality antenna but I have a major restrication!

 I cant mount it on the roof.... looks like I need a clip-on-the-gutter mount or similar to palce on side of house. Id like to have it as high as possible but again I cant place it on my roof

Can anyone reccomend a clip-on type Cb antenna?? :?:
I havent been able to find any...thanks....

You should really find a way around that........with a clip on gutter mount CB antenna....you will barley talk across the street with the noise level that CB emits!!
The only antenna that I would recommend for CB is an Antron 99 or a Beam,

Good luck in your search.....

The Solarcon Antron A99 is 18'3'' and handles 10-17 meters $49.00
The Solarcon IMAX99 is 17'6'' and is as good as the above $64.00
For these high frequency antennas you should mount them at least the length of the antenna from ground level.
The others you mentioned will be dissapointing in their performance and will do no better than a mobile antenna.
Both the antennas above have ground plane kits available which really makes them perform.
These are available at: ALF enterprises located in Washington State and can be ordered on line.
For mounting try a eve bracket mount and a ground post, works well.

ok thanks for the reply. I only want to talk / recieve about a 10-25 mile radius so I dont need a really good antenna (for long distance signals)
That's why I was looking at the lo-profile antennas(just for local range) .....but I'll also look in to the Antron.

thanks

on CB you will need a decent antenna to talk "only" 15-20 miles.

there are so many users using at once, it raises the noise floor dramatically.

Ok I might have found a solution

I came across these two antennas which are low -profile. i would either mount them in my attic or on a mast about 12' off the ground outside.

How do they look? any opinions?

A) Saturn Low Profile Base CB
http://www.antennawarehouse.com/CB/Saturn.htm

B) Antenna Warehouse Low Profile Cb antenna w/ full Size quarter wavelength radiator
http://www.antennawarehouse.com/CB/T-225.htm

-thanks in advance

Of *those* two I'd have to say that even a `cheesey' as the second one looks I'd still go with it over the first one. Two reasons... The first one is that I've had experience with the first one and while it does `work?' it's a *big time* compromise all the way around. To get out with the one I `played with' I had to use all the assorted `co-ax tricks' (That some will say `aren't' yet `are'.) to try and get as much signal as possible *to* the antenna, mounted it as high as, supposedly legally, possible, *and* resort to skullduggery in the form of an `amp'. Even then the result wasn't all that much better than a plain old groundplane. Second... No matter what they claimed back then, and now, there isn't any way that less than a quarter wave is going to perform as good as a full quarterwave or provide `2DBi?' of `gain'!

At least with the second one you've gotten closer to a quarterwave and might even have an `added?' benefit of a few more choices for mounting from the looks of the bracket. Also, *if* you can `sneak by' and can mount it off the end of the peak of your roof you'll benefite somewhat from possibly being somewhere around a halfwave above ground which while not quite `perfect' for that antenna is a lot better than 12'! *And* it doesn't `look' like it's an antenna nearly as much as the first one or the Antrons or just about anyone elses CB antenna offerings which is a `good' thing if you've got owner association restrictions to worry about.

*My* personal choice for a CB antenna is a Shakespear `Big Stick'. No `unsightly?' groundplane radials, just this `simple' (But unfortunately for some places with covenants.) long 5/8s wave off white fibreglass `stick'. Mount it approximately 1/2 wavelength above ground, use good co-ax with good connectors at both ends and properly sealed at the antenna end and you're `good as gold' to go. It's a design that has been around for almost `forever' and also almost `appliance like' in installation because all the `kinks' and tuning have been worked out for you already.

Just this `Olde Fart's' 2¢ worth. {GRIN!}

CB areal

There are two CB areals that are real REAL GOOD. first is a Quad Element Beam, the second one is "StarDuster" both are metal.( I am not sure you can get a starduster) but
those kick some serious airwaves.
I had a starduster between three trees, with guy wires on all three sides, tied off into the trees lol, it worked like a dream about 50 ft above the ground :).
I could have on a bad day my range was about 60 miles. A good day without skip about
100, sometimes more.
Starduster is a ground plane areal that looks like a rocket. The elements are at about a 40 deg angle from the center mast.

If I were cb'in again, I would either get one of those or a Quad element.
The problem with elements like that the BEAM is that you do not have omni directional use on it. You have to turn it where you want to BEAM to.

Hope that helps
