• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Good morning.

I am going to be getting a new CD Radio. I live in Canada, Ontario, Toronto. Would a regular CB Radio be ok or does everyone now a day use SSB CB radios. What would be a better choice. looking at the uniden beartraker 880 CB radio and the uniden beartracker 980 SSB

The 980 and its AM little brother the 880 suffer from failing displays, due to heat in a mobile environment. It is not advisable to buy this model if you will use it in a mobile.

Buy the President McKinley . It's a better radio anyway. If you decide on an AM only radio, any of the President line is first rate

By all means get one with SSB. You can always listen to AM signals on a SSB radio but can't listen to SSB on a AM radio. If the next sun cycle ever starts you should be pleased with SSB.

Yea the 980 where the best to get a few years ago but President stuff is the new leader in my opinion.
I agree with the the McKinley recommendation. It does AM and SSB. I owned one and it was a solid radio. Sold it to a friend to help him get on the air and he has had zero problems with it.

The only negative I can think of was I never got it to work right with old style dynamic mics. If your fine with the stock mic then that is a non-issue.
It DOES work great with the Bearcat wireless mic.

Yeah, the McKinley requires an Electret-type microphone. Some of the newer presidents can be set to either a dynamic type or electret type; but not the McKinley. The cheapo Cobra 19 series, I believe also uses an electret type microphone.

Another vote for McKinley here. I have two now. I run one as a base station, the other in my truck.

I have always had good luck with the galaxy rDios but in my opinion I think the older radio is voyage radio,vr 9000 for a moble and a eagle 5000 is a good one for a radio that stands by itself or if you want to run power then try the eagle 2000 it's the radios I own and I wouldn't take anything for them. There is a lot of good radios out there but I've found that galaxy is one of the best.
