• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Only one in recent years was the Midland 79-290. There were a couple in the 70s-80s that I believe were made by some "off brands" as I recall.

I haven't seen any advertised for use in the USA. It would be a very nice selling feature, wouldn't it?

It would have been nice if Cobra implemented a remote head or faceplate feature on the new Cobra 29 LX LE radio.

Gotta love the "120 channel" misnomer.

Is this a US legal unit?

@cfn: Is there a reason you don't get one of the handheld ones, and attach it to the outside, or one of the large microphone profile units?

...That it's a misnomer. There are a few ways to look at it. Basically, mod. or not, the import radios are selectable in channels for a reason, I think. Notice on some "10meter" radios that there is a letter selector reading A-F. That selects different bands in which you can both transmit and receive. I guess that feature is meant for the discressional use of the user, provided that user knows which band is allocated for leagl use in which country. For instance, the US CB Band, I beleive is "F". Not all bands are allocated for Public use in our country. Careful, most of those Bands are allocated for use by your local and beyond military bases and personel. You should be able to select the 10m band if you are a qualified and ticketed Ham, but that may bring out the Frownies!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8530/5.0.0.973 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Ranger, you are talking about something totally different. Many USB/LSB models are listed as having 120 channels, which is flat wrong. it does not have 40 USB channels, plus 40 LSB channels, and 40 AM channels, as the ads tout. They have 40 channels, which you can select an emission mode on.

Those facts have nothing to do with illegal overseas models.

Amateur radios are the only ones I have seen with detachable faceplates. I know that there are some CBs that use bluetooth though if that helps
