Hey guys and gals,

My first post here , Hoping to get some help and advice.

Ive had scanners for about 20 years, Listening to police, fire, Marine, and other random stuff like the truckers and cab drivers.

With CBRM moving to this new system, My old unit is silent.
I was looking online to see what to buy, But I dont know what will work ?
Ive been using for a long time, but I really do not know much about how the systems work,
This trunking and digital talk is rocket science to me.

Can someone give me some pointers on a decent yet not to expensive system to get so I can listen again ?
Mainly what I want to listen to is whats listed above, RCMP and EHS.

Can someone point me in the right direction or is listening not even an option anymore ?
Appologize for not knowing to much about how the systems work, hoping to get some answers here.

Thanks all

Hi there,
There are a number of different units available from Uniden or Whistler (or used GRE/Radio Shack units) that will track the new system. Although I believe it is P25 Phase II capable, everything on the system is being run as Phase I. There are no simulcast areas in Nova Scotia (nor do I believe that PEI or NB will either). So you don't have to move to a phase II capable receiver at this time or in the foreseeable future if you don't travel much.

RCMP have been fully encrypted since April 2013 and reliable reports are indicating CBRP is fully AES256 encrypted as well, so those are not listenable. Several government agencies will be encrypted (as with the last system) such as Military Police, Fisheries & Oceans, etc). Still lots to hear though.

This is a great site to read people's opinions of various scanners and you can get a sense of how well each model might work for you. Do some poking around, especially in the forum section: "Scanners, Receivers and Related Equipment Forums " You will find lots of advice / opinions there.

You should be looking at a digital scanner that does P25 Phase 1, examples BCD996XT, BCD396XT, PSR-500, PSR-600, WS1095 etc, and their newer variants

good luck!

Good luck with that, RCMP an cbrp have gone fully encrypted and there is no scanner out there that I am aware of that will break it ,as far as the ehs they can still be herd but you need a digital scanner thats capable of receiving 700 mgh .
