I guess the RS has an advatage then. I have between 1 to 3 CC on my RS pro-96

That is no advantage when it comes to the 396 since it does away with banks altogether. The memory layout in the 396 is far superior to the 96.

Is the memory layout on the 296 similar to the 396?

No. The 296 uses a traditional bank/channel architecture, while the 396 uses a far more flexible system/group architecture. In essence, you can make a "bank" just about any size you want.

It does take some getting used to, but once you do it's so much more flexible.

To answer the original question, no you don't have to have a dummy or blank channel in between the CC channels. IN CC only mode you can put as many control channels in as you want. The only problem with that is that if you are trying to track a multi site system, you run the risk of the scanner locking onto the "wrong" control channel.

What I was doing on my 97 is, putting in a Tower in 1 bank or any tower in a certian county so I could track which TG I have heard on that tower.

You can put all the trunked systems in a bank that it will hold as long as they are far enough apart that you only pick up one system. E.g., I have Akron, OH and Columbus, OH in the same bank. Works fine as the two cities are 120 miles apart.

you could put 2500 motorola trunked systems in a Pro96 with only 400 in the unidens

2500?? Not very practical, to say the least. And "Only" 400 in the Unidens?? What a terrible shortcomming!!

The BC796/296 will only do one control channel per bank - 10 banks. Once it finds a control channel in a bank it will not look for another one in that bank.

i didn't say it was practical, i said it was possbile. multiple system in one bank is the advantage of 96
THIS THREAD IS ABOUT UNIDEN SCANNERS NOT RADIO SHACK. If someone askes a question about a Uniden scanner DON'T TELL THEM HOW TO DO IT ON A GRE SCANNER.

And actually, the 396 even trumps that. If you view the channel quick keys as 'banks', you can assign multiple systems to one quick key. I have both the local PD apco25 and the local pd type II systems assigned to one hotkey, which toggles them both.

Actually its about both since the original poster mentioned both Uniden and Radio Shack...
