• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Guys is it normal when you have a factory Motorola remote head kit designed for the CDM1250 connected that the CPS software is not able to connect and read the radio but when the remote kit is removed and the head installed on the radio directly it reads and writes to the radio fine? This can't be...can it?

It happens and it's been discussed many times on the Motorola forums across the net.

The first thing to do is to make sure you are using the correct Motorola 10 pin remote cables between the radio and the control head. These units can be remoted with standard CAT-5 cables and work fine, but the 9th and 10th pins are needed for programming. So use the right cable for starters.

If the unit still won't program, you are stuck with disassembling the remote head and radio and placing the head back on the radio. In under-dash configuration, it will program fine. I've never heard a definitive reason for this, but speculation centers around the flat cabling inside the control head.

The search function should help you find some of these threads if you want more discussion, but the short answer is what I have told you.

Interesting. Thanks Steve. I actually did a search prior to posting this message. Obviously the wording I used didn't trigger a results but I appreciate you taking the time to let me know what the deal is with anomaly.
BTW it's a factor 10 pin remote cable.

Thanks again,
C

I have a radio that did this -for a while-. Factory 10 pin RJ50 cable, real Motorola RIB with new 9v battery, but a home made programming cable.

I tried using an "official" Moto programming cable, and it still happened. I'd have to pull the radio out of the truck, reassemble, as Steve said, program and then reinstall.

A while later, I tried again without taking it out, and it worked fine. No idea what changed, it just started working.

One thing you can do is to use the 20 pin connector on the back of the radio. Motorola has a cable for doing this: AARKN4083A
That should allow you to program without taking the radio apart. You can brew your own using this diagram: http://www.batlabs.com/images/cdmprog.gif If my radio ever stops programming, I'll make one of these guys and give it a try. Already have the parts…..
