Sounds like they did it right for good service to the agencies while respecting the people who are paying for it.

If they couldn't afford to replace or upgrade their last system in 30 years, what's going to happen in 5-10 when this new one is EOL'd?

I thought this kind of stuff didn't happen in Iowa.

Maybe they got smarter about buying parts and spares to extend the system life with internal support. Also, does your EOL comment include the shift on P25 to the next rollout? That might be a different kettle of fish entirely...

Well, one major vendor pretty much spells it out in their own words:

"A customer needs to look at a P25 Astro system differently than they have in the past..."

ASTRO 25 Lifecycle Management: Keep Your System Up To Date Video

Which translates to:

Get ready for constant, endless costly forklift upgrades, very short product life cycles of both FNE and subscriber hardware, and much shorter product support cycles.

We pay more, we get less.

What a deal!

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — It only took about 30 years, but law enforcement agencies in Linn County now have an easier time talking with each other.

They could all talk to each other before the new system. That statement is how they sold the system to the public. Linn County had a VHF and UHF repeater linked together that was also patched into the 800 TRS. The state patrol could even have direct communication through this linked system.
