Greetings to all. I have been listening to traditional PD/FD/EMS stuff for years on my scanners. Just recently I thought about listening to aircrafts, mainly the commercial ones. I have read through the Wiki, and the aircraft forums, but it seems there is a lot of information and frequencies. Should I just program in all the frequencies listed on AIRNAV for the airports I live close to? Not looking for someone to give me a frequency list, just let me know what to program in for best listening. For example, like the tower, approach, or what other listings are posted. Also, being 60 miles away, will I still be able to pick up communications?

Being 60 miles from the airport, you aren't going to hear tower communications or other signals transmitted from the ground. If I were you, I would program in the approach frequencies from airnav.com. I always have the 121.5 mayday frequency active as well.

Good post... I should have read he wanted to hear the Commercial Aircraft.
I live 3 miles outside of KEWR so I hear the tower with no problem.

Just wondering if you could email your list of NJ / local aircraft freqs just
to compare notes here. hwcwx@ix.netcom.com

Thanks

Tony

Living in Central NJ if your scanner gets the milair range you should have no problem listening to Giantkiller, and the air refueling out in the Atlantic. Check out Maryand's military air II forum. It is loaded with freq.

I live in Central NJ and listen to aircraft occastionally. I rarely understand though what exactly i'm listening to, or what the freq. is exactly. So, could someone set me up with a list of some of the freqs. that are for commercial aircraft. I know 118.300 is newark but that's about all i know....so what else is out there??

Tony/mondaro: I'll just post my freq's here so other people can see also.

Since I live about 30 miles as the crow flies from EWR, the main frequencies I listen to are the approach frequencies:

127.60
128.55
132.70
132.80

And departure:

119.20

I also listen to the Newark tower (118.30;134.05), since I can still pick up the aircraft initially contacting tower and receiving clearance to land. For me, the transmissions begin to fade out as they cross the TEB/Meadowlands area.

If you live close to EWR, you can listen to ground (121.80;126.15) and clearance delivery (118.85). You can also listen 115.70 for the ATIS weather, but it is not necessarily an interesting frequency. :)

If you want to listen to busy airports and get used to what the pilots and controllers are saying, I recommend going to liveatc.net, for live audio streams of airports around the globe.

And as I said before, airnav.com is a great site for finding the frequencies you need.

Thanks... I was aware of those freq's. I am doing some work to find out further ground and operational ground freqs around the airport. I like to listen to the Class B / TCa on 127.850 to hear the helicopter traffic, Also another good freq is 123.025 to hear the
News Helicopters communicating and also Hudson River and East River stuff. also
to hear the western edge of the LGA area I also hear stuff over Eastern Hudson County.
NYPD Aviation is using 123.100 as well.

For as my ground work goes I have programmed PA Operations at the Airport.
some ground services such as signature aviation and PAPD Police EDACS system.

Take Care...

If you like listening to VFR traffic, the NY sectional charts are a good resource for frequencies. Lots of labels directing pilots which frequencies to contact for certain clearances. As for ground frequencies, I don't know many besides some of the PANYNJ frequencies, since I wouldn't be able to pick it up from where I live.

Guys,

I hadn't worked on this for almost 2 months, but I made a few small changes & re-did this quick guide for those in NJ/Metro NYC that want a good place to start for monitoring aircraft.

Please get back to me on PM with any changes that you see that need to be made...

I don't think it was mentioned in the previous posts, but EWR Tower - Class B (Bravo) airspace frequency of 127.850 can be interesting to monitor. I originally started monitoring this when NorthSTAR MedEvac would fly out of UMDNJ and throught the EWR airspace.

I beleive any aircraft that flies within an 8 mile radius of the airport, must check in while tranversing through the EWR airspace. I am not sure what the altitude restriction would be and sometimes, the Tower will tell the pilot to contact the main Tower freq 118.300 or EWR Approach.

If someone can post the exact regs, it would be appreciated.
