I am pretty new to mil air monitoring (not to scanning), and I need a few tips from anyone who listens in the Central Ohio area. What frequencies are most active in the area? I've tried listening to Rickenbacker's freqs in the database, but have not picked up much.

Thanks guys! :) :) :)

We have one or two Ohio pages in the Wiki (the MONIX page and one that evidently you need some sort of password....). No doubt there are more out there, somewhere.

Take a look at the first time thread - it's a sticky in this forum - for some suggestions on how to start. Milcom can be a bit difficult at first if you don't know where to look...

[edit] A quick look at the ARTCC pages suggest Cleveland or Indy as the ARTCC center for Ohio - it seems to be kinda split through the midpoint of the state.

You didn't mention anything about an antenna, and I'm assuming here you're using your 2055 - hearing milair takes a good antenna up in the air. A little whip on the back of the radio won't cut it.

In fact, now that I look at the wiki more closely, the Tri State scanner page covers parts of Ohio, and there's a wiki page for the 180th FW as well.

There are also a few other places you can use to glean information;

a. The Milcom mailing list on QTH.net - the archives are publicly available. Look for a user 'ohioscan' or Jeff Pryor (heck, come to think of it, see if either of them are members here), if memory serves me;
b. Even tho it may not strictly be in your area, the MONIX group is very knowledgable - I wouldn't overlook them as a source of information - they even have a Yahoo group...

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MONIX/

c. And finally, but by no means the least, the Ohio forum.

That would be me . . . while from NW Ohio, many of these would still be monitorable from down there. I'm including my last post to MilCom with Toledo Ohio activity from June 2006:

Active frequencies from the Toledo Ohio area in June 2006:

228.9000 NORAD Huntress
234.9000 Black Talon
235.1000 AR-206L Primary
236.8000 FFO
238.8250 Battlestar CP
251.1250 ZOB Carleton
252.1000 Brickyard CP
255.4000 FSS
259.5250 ZOB Saginaw
260.9000 NORAD Huntress
269.4750 ZOB
276.4000 ZOB
281.4250 ZOB Flint
218.4750 ZOB Findlay High
283.9000 AR-217 Primary
284.6250 ZOB Bloomingville Low
285.4000 TOL Tower
285.4500 Minn Center
285.6250 ZOB Saginaw
291.7250 ZOB Findlay Low

307.0000 TOL App/Dep
311.0000 ACC Primary
314.2000 MTC App/Dep
317.5500 TOL App/Dep
321.0000 ACC Secondary
349.4000 Buckeye CP
352.6000 AR-218L,220 Primary
360.7000 ZOB Litchfield
372.2000 PTD
379.2000 ZOB Waterville

Confirmed stations/callsigns:

Battle 21
Chevy 21,25,26
Cody 01
Goliath
NASA 608
Pat 639
Reaper 11
Sentry 05
Steath 91
Sting 11,21,31,41,51
Tanker 06,22
Thunderbird 5 (flight of 6)
Vader 04

Best bet is to fit as many frequencies in as you can and plenty of patience. I log and record military aviation audio 24/7 via my Pro-2052 and the 'ID Tracker' software to build my monthly reports.

Excellent, thanks. I heard some comms on 292.0 in the early evening requesting a "security detail" be available when they arrive.
