Hello, I came across this channel on accident and I am picking it up from South of Fresno. It is 460.525 and is showing digital and sounds like P25. They are using call signs like District 1, 10-7 and 4 Baker 26. Any idea who it may be? I do not have a NAC and a RR search shows nothing digital assigned to that frequency in California, much less anywhere near the Central Valley.

That’s kings county sheriff 5 (car to car). Kings county sheriff is moving to P25 in near future and they may be testing it out. Could also be Kern county high school police. https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?action=isf&freq=460.525&stid[]=6&tone=&coid=1

Its definitely not KCSO. And I don't think it is Kern School Police either as they are checking stores, etc. I haven't caught a street name yet as I will try and narrow it down that way.

Interesting that KCSO is going P25 again after the hot mess it was last time. Do you know about when they are transitioning over?

No, just that it’s part of the next upgrade because the current county radio systems are failing (KCFD 2 AND KCSO 2 repeaters keep getting stuck open).

How do you know it isn’t KCSO 5? It’s their car to car and and is used often.

Because I know their unit identifiers and it is definitely not them. 1000%. But I do hear them on 5 from time to time.

I hear that poor radio guy logging on in the middle of the night during a major storm having to head up to Joaquin Ridge because of these problems. That can't be a fun drive up that mountain when it is pouring rain.

I’m partial to say it’s Kern. Those terms sound familiar for Kern county and they use baker instead of boy/bravo.

There’s also fresno state. ULS License - Public Safety Pool, Conventional License - WPRH534 - CALIFORNIA, STATE OF

Fresno State's emission designator shows them to be analog.

Back to Kern. I checked their website and it says they only operate from 7-4:30 during the school year and to contact local agencies after those hours. I've heard a few different units in the last hour or so but I'll continue to monitor until I figure it out. Thanks for the research!

Because EVERYONE always follows the rules. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Also, I wonder if maybe the Kern sheriff has the school frequencies plugged in to their radios for interoperability sake and some deputies are “borrowing” or misusing the frequency. Who knows though, I just know there are always stories on here of people misusing radio equipment. The stuff I hear on KCSO 5 is proof of it. Lol

Fresno State is only showing 5 watts. I don't think that would even extend beyond their city limits.

As far as what I am hearing, they are talking to a dispatcher but there is no identifier to dispatch and not much traffic. I did set up a SQ search to see if I could catch a NAC, not that it would help.

And yes, 5 is very entertaining at times. LMAO!!

I am hearing some FM comms between dispatch and an officer who gave some citizen a verbal warning. I am near Fresno and the signal is weak here. Dispatcher later advised about a vehicle being out of Modesto, so I may be hearing Chowchilla PD on this particular antenna.

I am not hearing any P25 traffic yet, but I will leave one of the receivers set to monitor and advise. I'll switch over to an improved antenna as well.

Yeah you my be hearing Chowchilla. This is definitely digital for sure. They haven't said anything since I started searching for the NAC. I just need to catch a road name or business name and the puzzle will be solved. Thanks for helping to figure out who this is.

I connected a high gain collinear antenna to a radio and reduced the scan list quite a bit. I also set the frequency for digital and to record it. Time will tell.

Before I limited the mode to digital, I heard some chatter about a stadium and some guy sleeping there. This sounded like simplex, but I am not sure. It appears that one of the FCC 460.525 MHz listings for the state of California has the coordinates of the Fresno Convention Center.

emt_531, in which county are you located?

A quick update: After almost 24 hours of monitoring, no recordings were made. I may be too far north. I presume they are using some folded dipoles that are set to work in their coverage area, which is not toward my location. For simplex I would not pick up Kern County and Kings & Tulare would have trouble too, to give you an idea of what I can hear. I figure the repeater is on one of the two ranges, but their antenna direction are still going to favor their coverage area and not necessarily north toward Fresno.

I will let it continue for another day here at the house. This weekend I will be at a higher elevation east of Fresno, but the monitoring time will be quite small as I will be transmitting quite a bit during an amateur radio contest. I will have it on while I setup/breakdown and when I sleep or take a break and go for a walk. If things are slow during the contest, I may monitor more and connect a 7 dBd antenna and aim it that way.

I’m beginning to think it’s just an anomaly, or something from an adjacent frequency that happened to come in clear. I have a scan list on my scanners of just stuff that doesn’t have PL/DCS/NAC in the database and sometimes I’ll catch stuff that i think is what I’m looking for but it’s on the next step in the frequency plan.

I'm in Kings and still hearing them.

It is odd because it is P25 and quite clear. I don't know any agencies outside of Kings County in the immediate area that use P25 except CHP HEAT and it's not them either. Since I have turned on the SQ Search, I have not been able to pick up a NAC. Years ago, I used to pick up skip from I believe it was Stockton PD during the summer months who is P25, but until I catch a street name and can narrow it down, it will remain a mystery.

I would search the database up and down a step and see if anything pops out. Some areas equipment isn’t tuned all that well sometimes and bleeds very clearly. Tulare county and Kern each have 2 frequencies that are close and if you tune one with no tone, you’ll pick up the other and vice-versa.

I am leaning more towards it is somewhere in Kern County if Vagrant can't pick it up north. I'll be heading that way this weekend and see what I come up with.
