More great insight, thanks Jay.

Any word on a Bronto exercise on Stephen Avenue today? If it's over lunch, it would be fun to mosey on over and see the big rig in action.

going back to post #198, does the deck gun have a seperate hose line connection, and also can you just hook it up directly to the hydrant then?, and also doesn't #3 pump have a new rig anyways?

,thanks

Is it a deck gun or a monitor? What Jay suggested makes sense in that it is a quickly deployable monitor that is already hooked up.

You won't want to run something directly off a hydrant. Hydrant pressure is generally less than the 100psi (700kPa) required to run a firefighting appliance (nozzle, deck gun/monitor, etc). That's why cities have pumpers - to boost and maintain the pressure.

People sometimes use the term "deck gun" and "monitor" interchangeably. Some "deck guns" (which are fixed on a pipe mounted to the truck) can be disconnected and made into a monitor (mounted to a portable base which can be laid out on the ground somewhere).

The one Calgary (and several other agencies around the area) uses is called a BlitzFire monitor. They are not deck guns and can't be mounted on the truck except for storage purposes, but can be preconnected to a 65mm (2 1/2") or 77mm (3") hoseline and rapidly deployed. We have one on 50 Pump which is connected to 200 feet of 77mm line. The Blitzfire can be just thrown out on the ground and utilized unattended. Here's a picture (shut off, but deployed, right hand side).

I was headed over to MEC at lunch and saw that the new 36 Pump was parked outside, so I decided to make a small detour to check it out in person. All the doors were open at 2 Station and there was a firefighter outside there so I awkwardly/nosily asked if it was a deck gun or monitor. Although as I walked closer I could clearly see that it was a fixed mounted deck gun, the nice FF confirmed that for me. We chatted for a little bit and he said they were just testing it out and that it would go out to one of the outlying stations once all the tests were complete as a truck with a deck gun is pretty much useless downtown. He also mentioned that there were too many alarms on it and they were always going off. :D

The new 2 pump that is in those pictures is apparently in the shop right now.

The new truck sure felt bigger standing close to it, it has more of a prescense than the older 98-00 trucks do. I was also surprised to see some sort of strobe or LED lights on the rear of the truck as opposed to the standard single red light rotators.

35 Pump, shop ID P5008, is visible in this CTV News story where a media member gets to be a firefighter for a day.

25 Tank, T0107, has reportedly not held up well in the past year. I heard rumors a few weeks ago that it was out of service due to the water tank itself having issues, and now I'm told that the truck frame is developing issues. 22 Tank T0400 has been reassigned as 25 Tank for the time being.

Heard another rumor that 33 Station will open on 20081006 (Monday). Yet another other rumor has #3RRV being sold to Rockyview to become the first apparatus for #73 Station which will protect Elbow Springs (the communities between Calgary and #22 on Hwy 8).

The Apparatus and Maintenance Shop will be moving there as well as Fire Headquarters, Fire Stores (as in equipment storage, not a retail outlet), and Health & Wellness. The saying that's going around the department is that a crew will have one stop to get all their stuff done - the truck will be in for a pump test or oil change or whatever at the same time as the crew can meet with chiefs, arrange for their gear to be cleaned/repaired, and get their physicals done.

It's going to be behind new #4, meaning west of it on the hill that overlooks Deerfoot from the Vista Heights side of the intersection.

I was by #35 recently and it looks closer to being finished than I'd been told. I'd heard it was going to be delayed by as much as a year, but the walls are up and styrofoamed, and look ready for the brick cladding - something that was put on #33 only a few weeks ago.

I would suspect the other hall(s) he will announce are 36 (8 St x 2 Av SW downtown), and maybe 37 (deep deep south, south of #30, toward the new hospital). I saw a document recently which I'll try to find again that has plans for halls all the way into the mid 40s.

so then all maintenance on trucks and all fire headquarter (chiefs etc...) stuff will be done from this one place, the old health and wellnes building (old #26 station) will be at this one place, and isn't the building beside #4 station and that hotel?

Doubt it. It runs as a squad, but it's called 36 Pump. Some captains might call it 36 Squad, they think they're being smart... ;)

Was past 16 station today. The boneyard is staggeringly huge now. Aerials, tankers, tons of stuff in there. E1408 is sitting behind the shop decaled for #4 Emergency. Same manufacturer as the rest of the fleet.

In non-CFD news, RMES has two trucks in build now. A brand new 2008 Dodge RAM 5500 cab and chassis is somewhere on the rails between Mexico (where Dodge builds their light trucks) and Calgary, and will be outfitted with a rescue body and water tank/pump by RMES personnel over the winter. This will become 50 Rapid Response; the existing 50 Rapid Response will be refurbished and used as a support vehicle. The other truck in build right now is a Pierce Contender pumper from Pierce Fire Apparatus and Wholesale Fire Rescue. It will be on a 2009 Kenworth chassis and will replace one of the existing pumpers, when it gets delivered in Summer 2009.

Haha, too funny.

Where is 4's old Emerg headed?

I didn't see it at the shop; I couldn't tell you.

The one thing I can think of is that either it's the truck 4E already has and I never noticed the new shop number, or maybe the truck 4E used to have will move down to 26 and replace E0590, which, while it is a mighty beast, is still an 18 year old truck.

One of my counterparts at CFD is pretty convinced that 31E is a permanent move, i.e. that it will not be coming back to 14. It's a better fit for the city up there.

All the comms equipment and city property has been removed from 27... I'd be surprised if it doesn't get bulldozed or something soon.
