Teenager victim of gunshot while hunting with family

A fourteen-year-old boy was fatally wounded by a gunshot wound to the chest Saturday afternoon while on a hunting trip with his family. Investigators say early indicators suggest the incident was accidental, although additional inquiry is being carried out.

The boy, a resident of Brighton, Colorado was hunting in San Isabel National Forest with his father, mother, and grandfather at the time of the incident. The father and grandfather called the sheriff's communication center shortly after five pm to report that the boy had gone off alone a short distance when family members heard a single gunshot and found the boy lying face up motionless nearby, his rifle across his chest. Responders, including Undersheriff John Spezze and medics from the county's Emergency Medical Services, determined that the boy was deceased.

The victim's name is being withheld until all relatives have been notified by the coroner.

The incident occurred four miles west of County Road 221 near Forest Service Road 222 on national forest land. Other personnel who responded to the scene were from the local office of the district attorney, Colorado Division of Wildlife, and the Chaffee County coroner's office. The body was taken to the county morgue in Salida. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Although preliminary investigation indicates that the victim's wound was self-inflicted accidentally, the official determination of the cause and manner of death will be released by the coroner at the conclusion of the investigation being conducted by the various agencies involved in the case.
