• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a XPR 5550 uhf radio with a standard control head on it. I bought I believe a rev (E) head. I installed it on the radio and I get a flashing red light.
Radio seems to work for the most part I think a couple buttons didn't work though? I put it on the shelf for now. I used version 14 of rss to program it.
But I didn't have a copy of tuner or firmware for that version. I may have version 15 and 16 some ware? i believe those have firmware and tuner on the factory
cd's? I just don't know the steps to update the head to the radio I miss it. Any one that knows how to do this willing to please tell me?

Thanks.

I seem to recall from a previous somewhere that the E models heads are not compatible with non E radios. Just curious, what did you hope to do with the head swap?

I've seen issues like that before resolved by doing a Recover in CPS. If you are going to give that a twirl I'd be sure to save your codeplug (which I'm sure you already have) and for good measure read & save your tuning values with Tuner.

radio was dropped on control knob so it was a bit funky and something else I don't remember so I figured for 50 bucks I would put a new one on? Now seems might be a mistake?

Might get gutsy and try that if no one has anything better to try I hate to brick the radio?

Red light means firmware mismatch. I get that all the time from installing the handheld control head kits which never have the current firmware. Try updating firmware.

On newest units I have to "recover". Always read and save the tuning values via Tuner, just in case.

I have changed control heads on 4550s in the past and always had to do a recover to get the head and radio to function together.
Let us know if you get it to work.

Just a recovery or have you had to save tuner info and cope plug as part of it to restore it?
Thanks.
