I see this listed in the US Marine VHF Allocation as US Government only. What is this frequency used for and by whom? I am in the Salt Lake City area and hear traffic on here quite frequently. I haven't figured out what they are talking about, it sounds like two stations casually moving around. Occasionally the transmissions are scrambled using simple speech inversion technology. I hear profanity occasionally which leads me to believe that these aren't government stations. There are several large bring shrimp egg harvesting operations on the lake but that have sophisticated digital encrypted comms to keep their operations secret from the competition. Any thoughts?

There's no shortage of people that use VHF marine channels for other uses.

There's reports of a lot of hunters buying radios from outdoor retailers. Reports of truckers using VHF marine radios. "Preppers" like to use VHF marine.

Nothing to stop VHF marine radios for working on 82A, people that ignore the rules about using Marine VHF for not marine uses are not going to give a flip about using a government channel, either.

Checked FCC database and didn't see anyone licensed to use it in UT. But some VHF marine channels do get used legally well inland for LMR use.

I just figured out that these guys are flying (“altitude 8,000!”). They also are referencing targets and the range. Hill AFB has a range west of here but I’m surprised to hear Mil Air comms on vhf fm in this band.

That would be the other option...

Federal users/military, are not bound by FCC rules. They run under NTIA rules.

82A is a government use channel. Could be USCG talking to one or couple boats the CG has on the lake.
Their seahawks are equipped with Trakkar and may be relaying range to targets.
I hear more profanity on mil channels than anything, even a couple female pilots talking about the dresses they will wear to party's

Don't think it's the USCG. There units use channels 21A, 23A, 81A and 83A.

Here in Washington DC area we have two USCG H65 helos at Reagan National Airport to intercept the low slow aircraft that fly into restricted airspace. They conduct two aircraft traffic for intercept missions on 21A mainly at night. They are TDY from Air Station Atlantic City and rotate back with others coming down all the time.

I know that Navy sometimes uses 82A like the YPs in Annapolis that train midshipmen.
