I did'nt see my question form yesterday so I wanted to ask again. Sorry if it's a repeat. I have a RS Pro 97(trunking) and I used to listen to CHAPEL HILL PD and UNC PD / TARHEEL 1 Helo on the 453 Freqs. During the last month(s) the UNC & Tar Heel Helo dropped out and now the Chapel Hill PD are gone too. I read about VIPER and I got the "Orange County (Chapel Hill)" 800 Mhz freqs and inputed them. All get get is alot of noise (not just the control channel) and no PD calls. Am I missing something? I must have missed something I am sure. I REALLY would appreciate any help.m Thanks eb

the Viper database shows the CH talkgroups as DIGITAL....so all you would hear is noise instead of clear voice transmissions on a non digital scanner :-(

sorry

Duh !!

Thanks alot .. that explains everything. Kinda of POs me cause the Salesman talked me into getting the pro 97 since Chapel Hill PD were "going to 800 hz". I could have bought the cheapee model I wanted and saved around $60.00 . Oh well .. always need a paper weight.

Thanks again ekb

Yep...one thing to know these days is not to trust anything that a Radio Shack employee says about scanners (or radios in general)....he was right on 1 thing only: Chapel Hill PD Has moved to 800Mhz (VIPER) but like most other agencies on VIPER they operate using digital talkgroups....Your Pro97 is a great analog scanner but will not pick up anything that says "digital" in the transmission column in the database....if you bought the scanner less that 30 days ago I would take it back and demand a refund...you are looking in the neighborhood of at least $300 for a digital scanner....
Sorry we couldn't give you better news!

don't feel bad, the salesman steered you wrong......something you can bring up to his store manager or HIS district manager when you go back....but i'd be thinking about going ahead and biting the bullet and getting the best deal on a digital scanner given where you live...you've already committed about half the funds you'll need in the pro-97, the radio shack store should be willing to honor their mistake and allow you to return it and upgrade ( more $$ for them ) to their digital scanner. It's in the best interest of both parties....( if they won't cooperate,if the date of purchase is too long ago, take it to another store and say you got it as a gift and it's not working on CHPD and you want to return it AND upgrade to digital....again more $$$ for them ! )

I know that the price is hard to budget these days, but i'd seriously consider it a safety and welfare investment for my family in case of storms, emergencies, distasters and even just daily police/fire/rescue activities that can touch your lives...knowing what's going on is a major peace of mind and planning aid for every family. Should be a required part of any disaster kit....let alone a daily enterteinment tool. Go ahead and bite the bullet...you won't regret it !
