Soooo....my bcd436hp came with the data/charging cable which everyone knows has the USB plug on one end.
Has anyone used THIS cable in conjunction with a charging block.
I think the input amps rating to the scanner is .5 from the 5vdc pc/laptop via the USB port.
I believe a charging block, I'm thinking of using, which is rated for 1 amp at 5vdc would be appropriate/safe to use as long as it doesn't affect the data part of the cable.
Does anyone concur with this thought process? 🤔
Also, in response to some questions about whether this scanner can charge during usage. During low battery notifications, MY charging/data cable will SUSTAIN usage (and turn off low battery "alarm") of the scanner but as some have noted, does not have enough amps to also charge the batteries during this time.

The cable works to power the radio when turned on and to charge the battery when turned off. You can use this cable with no worries about the data portion of the cable with any suitable power supply. You will need to select "yes" when you power the radio off for it to charge.

You can always charge the batteries outside the scanner. this is what i use on my 436HP and i get pretty good run time plus you can have a 2nd set charging or charged and ready to go when needed. this will prevent any possible damage to scanner charging them inside the unit. amazon is where i got mine.

While you can both charge the battery, as well as scanning systems, on the SDS100, the 436HP cannot charge and scan at the same time.

By ‘charging block’, I presume you mean one of the ‘bricks’ used to charge tablets and cellphones. It will power the 436Hp easily. I use one to power both my SDS100 as well as one of my 436HPs when I’m in my SUV. It’s 12volt lighter socket is only ‘live’ when the ignition is on, so I use the brick to keep them running when I’m monitoring systems of interest away from home,

I’ve also used these to keep the scanners running when we have extended power outages. The higher capacity ones can power the scanners well over a 24 hour period.

I use one of the AC to USB power adapters that has enough output capacity to power a 436HP, HP-2, and both power and charge my SDS100 simultaneously. It also can charge my iPhone at the same time.

Just to add to that, make sure the block/brick puts out a good amount of current because if it does not, the scanner 436 will draw power from the batteries, which will result in the batts going dead fairly quick after removing the cable..

I also have never charged batts in the radio. I use an Opus BT3100 intelligent charger and use Eneloops and Ladda (from Ikea, half the price). I have run the scanner off a cable at times without batts in the scanner but scanner will not record without batts.

Gotcha...even as I get the low battery notification, the scanner will still operate while plugged into the USB port which is ok even with it not charging.
I would prefer to have that situation while near an outlet and operating even if not charging. I will let it charge with the radio off and not listening or when I go to bed.
Thanks for the reply...

What I am saying is even with charging set to off, if what's powering the scanner does not supply enough current, the scanner will draw off the batts, if installed, and drain them. Scanner will still run when slightly underpowered without any indication. As long as your bricks putting out enough juice, she can stay running off external power and not drain the batts.

The 436 only draws about .32a with the display lit and audio set to 5, with the display off it's only around .2 amp.

I never charge the batteries in my BCD436HP, or in any of my other radios, since an incident in a previous Uniden scanner where I smelt burning plastic and saw smoke coming from the battery compartment...

A 436 doesn't check the status of the batteries, how much charge they have, and just charge the amount of time you have set in its menu. If the batteries are already full it will overcharge them and all charge energy will be converted into heat that destroys batteries.
I run my scanner without batteries and charge batteries with an external charger that use a temp sensor for each cell to cut the charge when a cells are fully charged and gets hot.
