I just got this scanner and am happy with it so far. I use Nimh high energy rechargeable batteries
and am charging them in the radio. The radio is not showing any indication that it is charging when
it is turned off. How do I know when the batteries are full?
I will be getting a second set of thise batteries and a charger so I can use one set while charging the other.

Thanks.

If you have the yellow holder in its charging. Get the charger and go that route. We almost always get threads where someone has had their scanner ruined by charging in the unit or using the wrong batteries in it....

Hoser has an excellent point !!
If you want a cheapie battery charger the energizer compact charger works pretty good for me.
It's not as good as the high buck ones but has led's to tell you when the batteries are fully charged
and seems to shut down by reading the voltage instead of a timer.
Better to be safe........the psr-500's are great radios but make for expensive battery chargers if
something goes wrong.

The Maha C401FS was only $39.99 last time I checked. Well worth the money. You will bet better
battery run time when you use a charger that monitors each cell individually.

I have to agree the Maha/Powerex chargers are the best!
Just ditched my energizer batteries cuz they stopped holding a charge and were't charging in the scanner anymore. Run time was terrible.
Lots of users on this forum recommended the Maha C808M Ultimate charger with Sanyo Enelop 2000 NiMH batteries.
Wow what a difference!
You get what you pay for with rechargeable s.

I recommend that you never charge the batteries unattended for any length of time and to use the La Crosse Technology BC900 charger:
I use the BC900 to charge/condition my eneloop batteries and I have been very pleased with it.

Somewhat related question: If I don't use the PSR-500 to charge batteries, can I use either battery holder with my eneloops? Thanks!

Either way, use alkalines, or get a dollar store cheapie charger until you get your optimal battery outfit.
Not worth risking the $500 radio.

I am now using an external charger. I don't charge the batteries with the radio. I only tried that out on the first day, and I was monitoring it for problems.
