I heard today, 3-3-10 at approx 10:45am, Charlie-100 calling India-100 on 166.5875 pl100.0.

In researching the Charlie-100 designator, I saw that it is for NLECC in Orlando. How could I be hearing this in Indiana?

It was just a radio check, Charlie-100 was in the basement...wanted to make sure he could be heard.

They have remote control to sites all over the country. The site you heard is probably just a few miles from you.

So then how does Orlando get a signal to Indianapolis? Is it through T1 lines or phone to a tower to transmit to the radio? Or does the signal blast off from Orlando and carry through repeaters until it reaches the destination?

T1, phone lines, microwave sites and related technologies along those lines!

VHF signals can't typically travel such long distance. Exceptions can happen on low band (30-50MHz) during the summer months when tropospheric ducting occurs.
