Undisclosed urban location.
Picked up a Pro-97 yesterday(damn what a great little radio, especially with the new Win97).

But I digress.

Any MilAir activity in the Charlotte area that's worth the effort?

MilAir is very hit and miss around here. I've kind of given up on routine milcom in the area, I just don't have time to sit in front of the radio waiting for stuff to happen. I don't have a freq list handy but there are a few AAR routes that pass near here. You can find the map and lists on the netnad can hear AAR missions almost every night. You can probably hear routine comms from the guys at Shaw AFB on VHF AM (between 138 and 144 AM mode). Most of those comms are plane to plane and can be very interesting. Be sure to program all of the common metro and command post freqs as well as the area UHF center freqs. After 9/11 when combat air patrols were common you could routinely hear traffic on 252.00 and 264.400 as the guys were flying the CAP missions. I know this is pretty vague but hopefully it's a start. I don't have my lists or programming files handy or I'd pass more freqs along but most of the common freqs are out there on the web.

acarsnut, where is your QTH and what type of equipment to you use for MilAir? Are you hearing comms on these freqs on a consistent basis? I hope so, that would be great. Since I put my new FT-8900 rig in the mobile I've been scanning the VHF MilAir band (138-144). I've been hearing more activity than I remember in the past. Maybe the activity has always been there and my Rx. setup is just a lot better.

Blinddog- I have a pro-96 and use Win-96. I can't imagine doing it any other way. Win-96 kicks ass!

Undisclosed urban location.
I have pro-96 and win96 also.
But I have found that the pro-97 is a little more sensitive than my 96 and 2096.
All of which are excellent radios.
Don did a great job on the new programs.

My qth is grover nc and I hear alot more in the 200 to 400 mhz band then 138 to 144.00 mhz.I use a 2 pro-2042's and 2 discones on a 30 ft tower. One for planes trains and everything but police and the other for just mil-air.Have speakers in every room of the house so I can listen to mil-air no matter where Iam at.And it wakes me up every morning when they start.Man its great to be divorced!!!!Iam making a list of the most popular freqs I hear. But yes mil-air is alive and well in nc.And you dont have to live near a base to hear it.Better than all the police junk.

Last week was really busy for training. This week is looking good also.

Hey all this was posted on the milcom mail group. This is what I have been listen to all week.making sure to include the guys name who posted this info.dont want to take credit for his work.

The 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw AFB is conducting an ORI this week.
They are using W-161/177, the Gamecock MOA, the Bulldog MOA,

Smaller search increments

I know that Milair falls between 225.00 - 399.000, but this is a huge frequency spectrum to search.
Would anyone have a recommendation of what part of this spectrum would most likely be more active to monitor?

Undisclosed urban location.
Monitored refueling traffic on 276.500 yesterday.
Tanker callsign was Olympic, chase planes were trailing 40 miles. Their callsign was Sawbuck.
Had to call off the refueling because the boom operator was having.....physiological problems!

This was monitored in d'town Charlotte with a pro-97 with just a duckie.

Planes moved out of area before finding out what the operator's problem was, but the tanker pilot was laughing about it.

So Blindog were you searching a range when you found that transmission or did you have that frequency set in the 97?

Undisclosed urban location.
Had the freq. set.
Programmed some of the freqs. that acarsnut had posted on this thread.

I'd never had much luck with MilAir until I got my Pro-97.
Now I get traffic every time I turn it on.
I own several Unidens and Pros and this is probably the most sensitive radio I've owned.

I pick up SCHP in d'town(uptown??) Charlotte on the 97.
I never could with my other radios, but maybe mine is an exception.
You could'nt pry it out of my hands.
