Cheap Homebrew 800 MHz antenna?

Anyone make one of these? Did it work? I need a good base antenna for my 796 - right now I'm using the whip that it came with, and the results are well.... mediocre at best.

I'm not expecting a miracle, but if this little thing will improve my digital reception I'll go for it. I figure it would cost about $10 or less to make.

Unity gain.
Solder the loops cloed on the ends.

Use an N or other good conector. Even a Teflon SO-239 will be OK.

Or just make the same shape right on the end of the cable.

Use a pice of hardline and split the shild with a dremmel and pull it out like the petles of a flower.

I just got through making one. It seems to work just a little better than my rubber duck antenna. Am I doing anything wrong?
