Hey guys,

I'm a NYC stringer (yes like the movie Nightcrawler) I currently use four Baofeng UV5Rs in my car, two are portables, and the other two are hooked up to lip mounted antennas.

My question is which mobile car radio is the cheapest that will work for listening to NYC channels? Most of NYPD, FDNY, etc. are all in the 470-490mhz range.

Is this any good?

I just don't like the price tag so far. If yall know of anything cheaper please let me know.

Thanks!

If you have a radio license, something like a 996P2 or 325P2 will work. You need trunking and digital because DOITT. Otherwise, just about any scanner will work. Most of NYC is analog non trunked,
But again, if you are a legit stringer you have a permit

Why does the OP need a license, or a permit? NYPD and NYFD are conventional analog.

The OP doesn't need digital trunking scanner. FG uses the analog DOITT system.

Just don't understand your post.

996P2 or 325P2 are in the $300-400 range. What do you think of the one I posted? Its $150. Of course, I would like something cheaper than that. Considering the UV5R is $36, I'm looking for something for permanent vehicle use so I don't have to keep charging those batteries.
