I question the sensitivity of them with an internal antenna. A small internal monoband antenna tuned to those freqs. might be more sensitive than a larger mulitband antenna optimized to receive everything but I've got doubts.

The uhf version only has coverage from 450.000 ~ 469.9875 MHz
so its going to miss all of the nyc freqs above 470 and only has
5 user programmable memories. It would be very limited for nyc.

not gonna work

I am wondering if the UHF version would be able to monitor FDNY and NYPD. My daughter lives in NYC and was pretty interested in my scanners last time she visited. Thanks.

Scanner Master - Police Scanners by Uniden Bearcat, AOR and Radio Shack.

that scanner won't do it. you need a scanner that covers 450-490 mhz
NYPD 470/476/477 MHZ
FDNT 482-486 MHZ
EMS 477-483 MHZ

This scanner would do it and its on sale for $100
PRO-137 Racing Scanner - RadioShack.com

Hardly seems ideal for a scanner given the narrow frequency range, lack of speaker output, and only five channels. Just about any cheap scanner would do a better job.

might be an interesting receiver though (I understand the shortcomings) - could be good in an evacuation pack, etc as one model does cover most of Cal-Fire and I am sure other somewhat local stuff for folks. I have an Icom R2 I use for ultra portable stuff, but something like that may be the ticket for people unwilling to take the learning curve..

Thanks for the replys. I will go with a standard scanner.

A standard scanner would do it, a pro-82, pro-135 scanner that go for $80. but a scanner with alpha tags would be better since All NYPD, FDNY and EMS channels all together would be around 100 channels.
