i took a radio in to total radio for a check up to see if it would work on tulsas system, the tech said i needed a new control head, when i asked to verify it would work on the tulsa system he said it would, when i asked how much for a new control head he told me the price but also said this radio would not work after oct 1st because tulsa is going to a new system. he said he didnt know what it was.he said alot of the small towns who are on the system now are not going to be able to use the system anymore. anybody got any ideas whats up? my guess is they are going digital,thats only a guess.

who knows, your guess is as good as mine, I have a friend that is in the medical area with homeland sec and he has a tulsa radio, and has said nothing about going digital.

yea, what i dont understand is even if tulsa does go digital how would it effect those who still have analog radios? arent the frequencies still the same 30? its the states system and numerous agencies are on them, red cross etc. i know an officer asked me a few months back what we were gonna do when they went digital. i assume a digital scanner is in my future. heres another question a frequency is a frequency right? is the only thing "digital" the radios and equipment? i dont get it? im "ld" so dont laugh, someone just explain it. no wonder jenks and gpool etc went with edacs. if the city of tulsa manipulates the radio system id go with edacs for my agency too.

It may be just a matter of time before the whole Tulsa system is completely digital. Going digital these days is like the neighbors buying a new car, before long all the neighbors have new cars and then one neighbor has to try to have a better car than all the other neighbors.

Yes, a frequency is a frequency as you put it. Digital is basically just another form of modulation of the frequency. In theory any frequency within reason could be used in a digital mode. Your regular FM equipment will be useless for communicating with them if they decide to switch to digital.
And yes, the equipment is what determines if it's a digital system.

I don’t think that if TPD is going digital that it will affect anyone else on the state system. I think that if they do anything they will have a mix of some digital and some analog channels. For example, the main dispatch channels will remain analog but the others such as, car-to-car, tactical, records, Teletype, exc.. will go digital. This is the same way that EMSA can be digital and encrypted on some channels, and analog on the mutual aid channels.

I agree with Hab. I think that person at TR is just another techy who thinks he knows what is going on when he actually has no clue since all he is used to installing is LTR and MOT hybrid systems. If you really want to find out about our system, talk to a radio tech for the city not some techy for TR who is making a living selling space on their own systems. Also for those of you thinking about getting a digital radio, think again, the users on our 800 system are most likely going to be encrypted. EMSA was the test market for that. You might pick up a fed agency using digital once in awhile but other then that don't waste your money like I did. Wait until we know for sure wait the guys down at the radio shop have in store and don't listen to the rumors. Listen for yourself to find out ehat is true and false.

im sure he was refering to the nextell rebanding crap, i noticed last night that catoosa pd had new handheld radios i had never seen before. had about 20 buttons on it. who knows!!! my attitude is becoming "who cares"!!! did hear from tpd that the 3 main sides a,d g will stay unencrypted but the car car and tacs etc will be encrypted...
