Explosion Reported At Plant In Morganton

MORGANTON, N.C. -- Eyewitness News has been told that there has been an explosion at the Synthron, Incorporated chemical plant in Morganton.
The explosion was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m.
Far Research, IPN Industries and Synthron are all listed at that address.
That's near the intersection of Amherst and Kirksey roads. Officials said the area around Vine Arden Road and Highway 70 is shut down and people are asked to avoid the area.
Officials said two people have been flown to Grace Hospital. There's no word on their conditions.
Authorities have evacuated the immediate area. Officials are instructing residents to take shelter in their homes by shutting all doors and windows and staying inside.
Synthron has fewer than 50 employees.
A man who says he lives about 200 yards from the plant says he heard the explosion and saw "a mushroom cloud" rise from the plant.
The company makes textile and water treatment chemicals and de-foaming agents, paint and coating additives.
