To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I have deciede to bite the bullet and drill a hole in the roof. Is there any easy way to do the install without having to remove the headliner? I have speakers and an overhead console with lights and wiring that I would like to get around if possible. Has anyone have any tips on making this go smoothly?

Thanks in advance!

I am going to drill it...I like the suggestion in the post above, taking the center roof console out and not pulling the entire headliner out seems like a good solution. However since I am going through the roof I wanted to center it for optimal performance. If I go through my console it will end up forward of center about where the front seats are and I am not sure if it will look good or have the optimal performance.

I used this type of method on my van. You can use the dome light positions also.

I used a magnet from a hard drive (inside) and a ball from a computer mouse outside (Rubber coated steel) to visualize the centerline of the van and where the antennas would be. Marked, drilled, and voila... Hard part is fishing the coax where you need it.. Just be patient and you'll get it.

I just recently did this myself. I mounted my VHF quarter wave in the center of the roof directly over the back of the backseat. Don't do what I did! I drilled right into the edge of a crossmember supporting the roof and almost had a orphan hole in the roof. I was able to finagle the mount in place and it worked out fine, but check before drilling. I did not pull the headliner. Just all the trim and used a fish wire to pull the cable thru to the C pillar.

No pics. I can take pics of the antenna installed, but I don't have any of the install itself.

In both of my XJs at home and the three at work, I just pull the front and back door headliner trim, shove a big screwdriver or BFH between the roof and headliner, then drill the holes. Run the cable down the pillar closest to your radios.

You will need a T15 and #2 Phillips to drop the trim.

I did this with a 1993 grand cherokee limited 12 years ago.

Worked great!

Also, that overhead console had some blank space towards the rear. I cut a hole in it, for a speaker. Took a rectangular speaker and flush mounted just the front of the speakerto that console with the cone into the hole I had made. It was SO nice to have that speaker in the center of the car just above my right ear.

I wish I took pictures!
