Does anyone have a complete list for the following towns & agencies:
Cherokee,Robbinsville,Bryson City,Graham,Jackson,Swain & Cherokee
Counties' SOs,Murphy & listings for BIA & Eastern Cherokee Indian
Reservation?
I plan to come to the Smokies one time this year before the winter gets
here & visit the Eastern Cherokee Reservation with a group from Oklahoma.
If anyone has a complete list, please respond & I would much appreciate
it.
Thanx!

As far as I can tell all the freqs listed in the rrdb are correct from when I lived in Asheville. Also while your up that way, if you get a chance to monitor Buncombe, see if you hear any LTR bursts on the VHF/UHF freqs.. TY in advance.

As for HAM-SKYWARN, I have no idea, as I wasn't much into HAM monitoring back then.

The state's "tower" (actually several towers in western NC) for the Asheville area IS/ARE up and operating, however the system currently has only trunked data (MDTs) on it. There are supposed to be 800 mHz portables in the hands of the troopers in the Buncombe County area on the Asheville trunked system but I can't confirm that at this time. The voice system at Baker Mountain/Catawba County is on line but there are no SHP units with 800 equipment in that area YET. This info is coming to me over the phone from one of the SHP trunking system big wheels as I write this.

OK, well if anyone in the greater WNC area gets any new info let us all know. Especially new ID's on the A'ville TRS, and any info at all on the BC TRS

Stormchaser203:

Be aware when you come that signals behave much differently in the Western North Carolina mountains than in Oklahoma's hills.

TYVM! I have a lot of friends in A'ville but none of them run scanners anymore :(... I will be visiting a few times this winter but would love to get current info before then, as well as get the trunking info to brian so he can update the db. The two things I miss most about WNC--- The mountians, and the beautiful snowfalls in the mountians. I was lucky eneough that when I lived in A'ville it started snowing on Halloween, and we had a few inches every 2 weeks till late March, It was soo cool..... though the 40 to 50 MPH winds comming off the mountians with air temps at 30 degrees made the wind chill scary sometimes LOL. Plus the after snow (snow blowing off the mountiantops after the sky was clear ) made lovely vids.

Amen to that statement. And it's quite unnerving for antenna gurus from the flatlands to find that a 1/2 or 5/8 wave antenna may not work nearly as well in the mountains as a 1/4 wave, especially when roof mounted. The unofficial word for most of the high mountaintop base station antennas there is "downtilt."

Amateur radio FM in the Asheville area pretty much revolves around the Mt Mitchell 145.190 repeater. At 6600 feet, it has a pretty good footprint, like 7 states or so under good conditions. On Saturday night there's a "6600 Net" that sees regular check-ins from NC, SC, VA, TN, KY, GA, and WV. A few years ago a ham just west of Charleston, SC was talking to another ham from just outside Charleston, WV and both thought the other was in the same "Charleston". I use it on mobile regularly along I-40 from just west of Winston-Salem, NC to just east of Knoxville, TN, bad spots in the Pigeon River Gorge notwithstanding.

In times of "duress" it acts as an adjunct to the official ARES and Skywarn repeaters all around and is the place to go for most of the good area info. Be sure to listen for one of the local characters, a retired school teacher named "Willie." She's a trip and knows more about the area than anyone I know.

OH and advance warning to anyone going to A'ville in winter: One- If your not used to mountainous terrain and winter conditions,.. be extremely careful.... and in A'ville itself- Be extremely cautious on Tunnel Road as you go through the B'catcher Tunnel on the way from the mall area to downtown A'ville as there is ICE in that tunnel from October to May, and it can fall on your car....I saw many a vehicle needing a new windshield ending up parking by the Greyhound station as you exit the tunnel. Otherwise have a great time, and if you get up that way too late this year, be advised that the Great Smokey Mountians National Park closes many of the upper elevation roads because the weather up there is far more extreme than in the valleys. Also if your near the Cherokee/Maggie Valley area, the roads going up past the Res to get back to the "I " heading back to A'ville is very treachorous in winter. If you get the chance to take the Helicopter tour there in Cherokee, do so, its an amazing view of the awesome terrain!

Speaking of hazardous conditions, watch out for BLACK ICE! If you're travelling on a cold weather temperature-marginal day, be aware that it may be misting rain but not collecting on the trees or power lines or your windshield, but in the shaded areas of the roadway where the temps were below freezing the night before, black ice is VERY common. This effect has ruined more than one visitor's day.

Oh of special interest to you stormchaser: I wish I had had my camcorder one day while a tornado did some mountian climbing back then,.. it was the most amazing thing I ever witnessed and I have seen lots of tornadoes.. this thing started in a valley (took out a barn and old outhuses-talk about shtf!) then took a liesurley climb up the side of a mountian doing nice lil hops over clearings to take out stretches of pine,... tapped the summit, then bounced to the side of another mountian, then vanished. No one was harmed, and only damage was the pine, barn, and outhouses.. but it was amazing to watch. The lightening shows in the mountians is awesome during Thunderstorms also, and the winds are much stronger in the upper elevations. I remember staying in a cabin for a week and the winds howled. :)

You will find pretty much everything you need on the Monitoring Times website, click on the Frequency Exchange and look for my newly revised list of local listening. I pretty much watch anything that moves around here and all the listings are based on actual monitoring, not something compiled from misc sources of the FCC. I think you will enjoy the list and have a nice visit here in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina.
