Hi Everyone, just received my Pro96 and have it set to the area correctly I believe. One of the things I would like to do is just scan for Chesterfield systems (Fire/Police). Is there a way to segment it to just those frequencies? Also, with the stock scanner that I have, is there anything I need to do to appropriately listen to all the activity? I would like to "Bank" Colonial Heights, Chesterfield, Richmond, etc ....

Thanks:D :D

Also, any details as to what kind of systems Chesterfield is and what trunking type I should be using would help also ...

I live on the other side of the state, but from what I have heard Chesterfield is part of the combined system with Henrico, Richmond, Colonial Heights, etc. It is a Motorola Astro SmartZone system. They don't use specific frequencies per agency (like Chesterfield) per se but there are different frequencies for each geographic zone. Unless you travel around alot, you would probably just program in the frequencies for the zone nearest to you.

For your banks, you would put the different agency talkgroups in each bank.

Chesterfield & neighbors...

Zippy, John's reply is pretty accurate from someone on the other side of the state. :D

I use a BC250D (until Santa comes!) for monitoring the regional system that Chesterfield, Henrico, Richmond, and Colonial Heights use. It's a Motorola ASTRO digital system, and each jurisdiction is assigned 20 or so frequencies, but these freq's can be shared amongst the system.

You'll need to put all of the Chesterfield frequencies in your scanner, but you'll only need to put the talkgroups in that you want to monitor. In simple terms, a talkgroup (TG) is like a "channel" on a non-trunked system.

I'm sure you have already, but be sure to check the "database" section of this site for additional info on this system.

Again, ask all you want, we'll try to help as much as possible.

dissapointed.....

I'm very dissapointed that there arent more people on the Virginia forum.......Just got a bc296d a week ago and love it. Had problems programming at first but eventually figured it out. I mainly listen to just police where i'm at. I live in Hanover but I do listen to Henrico PD and Richmond PD.

I also live in Hanover, and listen to the local SD on a BC780 and BC245. I have been on the fence on getting a digital model. Does it work well receiving Richmond, Chesterfield, and Henrico from Hanover?

Both of these Uniden models do trunktrack and thus eliminate the tones at the end of the transmissions on the Hanover system. I have been using them for several years, and they work well. Jim.

Hello all!

I'm interested in monitoring Chesterfield County. I'm new to scanning and I am starting off with a BC80 handheld until I get up to speed on what I will need to tap into the trunking systems. Glad I found this site and I look forward to learning more.

Chesterfield Co./RPSS

I recently bought a BC796 digital scanner and it's doing great.
My experience with Chesterfield Co., Richmond and Henrico Co.
reception presently is the "common" frequencies used are licensed to Chesterfield Co. These "common" trunked frequencies may rotate within a given system, but I doubt it. Yes, you can delete these "common" group trunked frequencies but in doing so you also delete Chesterfield Co. comms. Personally, I find Richmond and Henrico Co. popping up on the "common" use frequencies annoying when I am monitoring Chesterfield Co. Possibly selected talkgroups from Richmond/Henrico Co. can be locked out in the Chesterfield bank. I haven't checked yet on that option. For any sanity in monitoring, all three systems each should be in a separate bank. When I monitor I select only the bank or banks of interest. Colonial Heights does fine as part of the Chesterfield Co. bank and I have not found it necessary to put it in a separate bank.

Please make sure that you understand how the SmartZone trunking works... You can hear Henrico/Chesterfield/Richmond on *any* of the frequencies... if a radio's home is the Richmond system and it's signal wanders on to one of the Chesterfield towers, the talkgroup that radio is on will then be broadcast across the Chesterfield system as long as there is a radio around a tower that's on a 'Richmind' talkgroup.... same goes for Henrico units.

The system is 'Smart' enough to route traffic across the area to assure that if a radio from Richmond is way out in Henrico somewhere, it will still work and receive the proper talkgroup.

The way I have it setup is I program the three 'systems' in to seperate banks and then program the talkgroups for each area into their respective bank... I switch banks as I travel to pick up the channels I need when out and about. I turn talkgroup banks on and off as I want or need to hear certain types of traffic.

So far it has been smart enough to wander onto and find a home on the aforementioned Chesterfield Co. TRS frequencies. I wish it would wander back to Richmond City or Henrico Co. frequencies and stay there. I also have each TRS system programed as a separate bank.

I think the Charlottesville/Albemarle system is the same. I have systems programmed in the '396 with only the tg's I want in them so I can independently monitor ONLY city PD or county PD or ONLY fire/rescue. It seems to work very well as long as don't accidentally switch from ID Scan to ID Search. I just edited the trunk group tables as created by ARC396 from the db and then saved them with different names. The same thing should work in Richmond, at least on a Uniden. Maybe I'll get that new GRE instead of a new Ham HT this fall???

P.S. I've always thought there are plenty of people in the VA forum, we seem to have the state covered very well.
