These are the results I got revently searching the VHF FEDERAL BAND 162.6000 to 174.0000 in a local chicago suburb. I tagged some that I know and some I think might be tagged wrong this was from a VHF fed search I had done with my 996-XT and ARC-XT VIRTUALCONTROL over the last 2 1/2 days I live in Itasca close to O'Hare so that's why I'm thinking a lot of the frequencies with a NAC: of C02 are O'Hare customs but please make any corrections if I have made a mistake with the list, I also found a lot of frequencies that I cannot ID so if anybody has any info on the blanks please let me know. I am going to search the uhf band. I started that search tonight so I should have a list of all the digital frequencies I find there that I will post to the group via email or Radio Reference when the rsults are in.

FWIW, FBI A3 (170.7250) and FBI B2 (167.2125) have been pretty active lately, mainly in the evenings these past few days. Analog voice w/ 167.9 PL

Been a busy week, A5, A7, C2, E5, G3, H5 too. Good to hear. Hope P25 (for the still active analog channels) is still a ways away.

Yeah no kidding. I had my Astro Spectra scanning on the way to work and had at least 4 different repeaters active. Heard a few blips of DES-XL being used on A5; other than that it was all analog.

Don't have the exact year, but to the best of my recollection since the mid to late eighties for the A group.

Here's the news story of what went down on A3 and others (in the clear):

Already accused of using the name of a professor at Northwestern University to buy chemicals to make Ecstasy, Frank Caira allegedly asked a friend to help get him out of trouble by paying someone to kill a federal prosecutor and a drug agent on his case.

Federal authorities today said the two men tried to hire a gang member with a murder conviction in his background to do the job. But when they didn't pay him the cocaine they'd promised, the gang member allegedly passed information about the plot to his defense lawyer, who in turn called the FBI.

Caira, 39, of Downers Grove, was charged with solicitation of murder, along with Jack Mann, 41, of Naperville. Both remained in custody today.

Court records show Caira was charged in the drug case in December 2008, while working as a research technologist at Northwestern. He allegedly used the name of a professor to order chemicals and equipment used in Ecstasy production and was facing 14 years in prison.

It was Mann who allegedly reached out to the gang member on Caira's behalf, promising four kilograms of cocaine. The gang member later told authorities he wasn't planning on doing the hit anyway, and was only going to steal two kilograms he hoped to get as a down payment.

But that would have been news to Mann, who allegedly passed the names of the intended victims to the "hitman." By Dec. 27, the gang member had agreed to cooperate with authorities, and allegedly taped a conversation he had with Mann, who was complaining that Caira hadn't agreed to put up anything before the job was done.

"Now he's gonna play me for a (expletive,)" Mann allegedly was recorded saying, later adding, "No, (expletive), my time's worth money. If you want Jack Mann, you're gonna (expletive) pay."

Mann's attorney, Michael Petro, said his client would likely challenge his detention at a later time. Petro said Mann is a "respected member of the community."

Attorneys for Caira could not immediately be reached for comment. Assistant U.S. attorneys from the Northern District of Indiana were handling the case Tuesday after prosecutors from the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago recused themselves to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.

Not until they get P25. The majority of bank robbers lack the ability to focus on anything (less monitoring the feebs) other than robbing a bank, dealing with the stolen cash, and dealing with die packet stain.

Nearly five years later...

Sorry for the old thread bump but it seems appropriate.
I've logged activity yesterday and today on 170.8125 N653 which is noted in the OP.
It has been of a mundane nature, dispatch stuff and some ISPERN broadcasts.
Last night there was an open key for a few minutes.

What has me wondering, though, is that I had NO entry for this channel at all in my log for at least the last year and now it is active.
Does anyone know how and why these things come and go?

I have a scanner dedicated to searching VHF Fed stuff and never a peep until this weekend.

It's a federal interoperability repeater, so its use comes and goes with the requirements of whatever agency uses it.

I suppose I was hoping for something more conspiractistic.
The open mic thing has been going on&off all afternoon and I now suspect a piece of faulty equipment or perhaps even malicious interference.

Some of these interoperability repeaters appear on many different federal agency dispatch centers or sometime it might just be a radio on a desk in an office. Wouldn't be surprised if someone laid something on a desk mic or up against a base station and didn't notice the red light on the front…
