Had a small private jet go off runway 31-C yesterday at Midway Airport...no injuries, 3 souls on board. Slid into the grassy area off the runway.

Glad everyone was ok. Things like this can get alot worse as demonstrated by the last Midway incident. Nothing much really ever happens up here on the NW Side with the exception of what happened on Kimball Ave. That will likely be the last time we (the community) will see something big for quite a while. Not that we need anything to happen, we like it quiet.

I wouldn't say nothing happens your way. An off duty Chicago Police officer was killed in a motorcycle versus pick up truck crash at Touhy & Oleander yesterday. Based upon some of the blogs I read, it's not all Mayberry in the 16th District. I usually reccomend people dedicate one scanner to their home Zone, so those little things aren't missed. The press usually doesn't report on the good things that CPD does: Arrests for burglaries, robberies, weapons violations etc. It sounds like the south of 16 north end of 25 seems to be getting an influx of gang activity...tagging, batteries etc. I refer to this as the mundane listening, but if you know what to listen for, it may seem more interesting to you. Don't be lulled by the quietness, you never know when the "big one" will happen.

You are correct. CPD does make some good arrests when the politicians aren't busy using them as a source of revenue generation. I was talking to someone the other day and couldn't help but point out that the police are losing more of their everyday law enforcement function and the authority that is supposed to go with it because the city is crying that they need revenue, so they detail the coppers away from their law enforcement duties to write tickets for all sorts of silly things just to get those few dollars that it might produce.

I was listening to WBBM this morning, and the city is going to look into using Security Professionals to do their ticket writing / revenue generation so the coppers can do what they do best...get the bad guys!

Automation & Privatization

City of Chicago is now pressing for photo radar, to complement their photo Red lights. We have those, too in the burbs. I think you'll find that as traffic and code enforcement moves toward automated systems and privatization that a whole lot fewer of the "bad guys" end up being caught. It all starts with traffic...shame...

It is a shame that they can find money for things of this nature, but according to what i've been reading, only 7700 police officers are on the active rolls. Subtract IOD's, inside people, it's much less. Cameras are not the answers, just revenue generators. It's sad that "boots on the ground" are being replaced with automation throughout the country. The CPD's latest statistics reflect this, and also have been reading how alot of the shootings are not being reported so the Olympic Commitee will have a more positive reflection on the city. Maybe start a political views forum next...LOL!
