Note: I am a newbie to scanning and radio

Back before Chicago FD made the switch to UHF I could hear everything fine. Now all I hear is gargled mess on my BC92XLT with a rubber antenna. Are the channels encrypted or does it not reach as far now. I live about 12 miles from city center. PD still comes in loud and clear. Thanks in advance.

You need a Digital (P25 capable) scanner.

Chicago FD switched to P25 digital frequencies meaning that you cannot hear them on your BC92XLT. You would need a digital-capable scanner such as a BCD396XT. Unfortunately, those run $450-500 but it may be worth it if you definitely want to listen to CFD (Which I will admit is extremely fun!). Otherwise, you can just use the Radioman911.com CFD scanner or the Broadcastify CFD feed.

Good luck!
