Chicago IL Fire Department beginning switch to new radio system

After a lengthy delay that kept 2,100 portable radios in mothballs, the Chicago Fire Department is finally making the switch to a $22 million digital radio system designed to prevent a repeat of communications breakdowns at a deadly Loop high-rise fire.

I have been monitoring those "grid" tests here in Joliet, 30 miles SW of Chicago on my Uniden 396 and GRE500, it sounds very clear even at this distance using a outside antenna.....So far its conventional and i think its been reported to stay this way....
