Hello everyone, first time poster - I hope this thread does not violate any rules of this section and you may be able to help lead me in the right direction.

Been using some older model scanners for a bit now to learn about them more (mostly older BCD996T and 996XT models) and wanted to upgrade to something newer, handheld, and with P25.

Mostly would be looking for EMS and fire in the Toronto area, which I can see are all P25 digital frequencies.

My question is: I'd like to dive in with the BCD436HP, but wanted to make sure I was not tossing money to the wind if it was more worthwhile to get the SDS100. It seems most of the 100's are about double the price here over the 436. I would like to not break the bank totally, although I do understand this is a pay to play kind of thing.

Does the BCD436HP hold up well enough, or are there enough simulcast issues that it's worth bumping to the SDS100?

Thank you for your time and knowledge.

There are simulcast systems here in Toronto (both Toronto Public Safety and Metrolinx). However for most people/usage/locations the 436 is fine. Some of the larger US systems really have big issues with simulcast. You can also look at a used 396xt or 325P2 for similar programming to what your use to (and even copy your file over). I do suggest a Phase 2 radio for future compatability (if Toronto Fire and EMS go Phase 2 - some have been testing on it and you mentioned that's what you want to listen to).

436's can be found used in the $400-$450 range and new on Amazon in the $500-550 range. If buying used ensure to ask how old as the early 436's (2013-2014) had battery/clock issues and if I recall dim screen issues too.

NXDN and DMR upgrades are available for paid upgrade if later you wish to listen in on more systems (mostly commercial companies use NXDN and DMR in GTA).

Thank you Kris, much appreciated for that! I will likely shoot for a new 436.
