I used to catch the plane on 42.340, but a couple of days ago in San Luis Obispo
County I listened to the CHP spotter plane on 154.680 as they attempted to stop a car on Hy 41. I wonder if this is a change from the old freq. or just that I've overlooked this one in the past?

That freq is the surveillance freq for the California Department of Justice. You'll hear simplex operations on this freq across the state.

They'd probably stay on 42 mhz if it was just an idiot speeding on the highway. No law says the CHP helicopter can't chase a drug suspect. It might have been the DoJ narks too and they usually monitor their own channels and the local sheriff's narcotics enforcement channels...

State level law enforcment works together all the time; it doesn't qualify as mutual aid. For that matter, there are plenty of cooperative/regional LE efforts undertaken formally or informally on a daily basis; they don't rise to the level of mutual aid, either.

I realized that was a bad choice of words after I posted it, sorry. California (state of) Highway Patrol & California (state of) Department of Justice. Makes sense. :)

CHP Golden Gate Dispatch (SF Bay Area) has been known to utilize Tac-6 (45.06/42.38) for their Air Ops - Speed Enforcement program. It may also be in use at the Sacramento, I-80 (Applegate-Roseville) and I-5 (Los Banos) Corridors.

And they're probably tracking a drug dealer if you hear them on Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement frequencies such as 154.665, .680, and .695. Contacts with local police might occur on 154.92, .935 or 156.075, or 460.025. I keep the first three programmed in the county sheriff's bank because there is a lot of CAMP activity around here...
