Could someone explain to a "Northerner" what the various callsigns are for the CHP. I have been listening to an online stream and would like to have some idea as to who is who. I have Googled with no luck.

I travel to California quite a bit with my scaner so I would like the info for that reason too.

Thanks

They use a system of area-road#-unit#:

22122= 22 solono county, 12= hwy 12, unit (and beat assingment) 2

They say 22-122, vs 22-12-2

Or 22-84 , area 22, hwy 80, unit 4
or 22-683, hwy 680

In solono county along hwy 80, beat and unit assingments start with 1 in the south/west at Vallejo, end with 8 just west of Davis where solono county ends. w/ 3 & 4 in the middle in the Fairfield area

I tried to find my area list link for you but I'm still looking...

Found it- http://www.scancal.org/chp/chp.html

Click on the blue xxxx DIVISION links and look at the Office Number column.

Note that they often simucast adjacent areas when things are slow, like 21-Napa gets disptched on 22 Solono "turquiose" frequency instead of "grape"

CHP freq ERRORS

I can't believe after all this time (2+ years!?) that the listings on both SCANCAL and FREQOFNATURE have ALL the Tac channels wrong. I'll have to dig them up to correct them,
but for the time being, the one most used in the Bay Area (Tac-6) is Air-45.06 / Mobile-
42.38. It basically replaces the Ivory for functionality around here.

I'm pretty sure one guy posted them and they were fruitful and multiplied.....

End Transmission.

Metro

What is a "Metro" unit? Are those assigned enforcement in unincorporated area without freeways?
It is probably the Metro FSP (Freeway Service Patrol), a fleet of tow trucks that patrol the freeways in metropolitan (metro) areas. The units are contracted by the CHP (State of CA) and local Transportation Authorities (like where I live, the MTA, aka, METRO). Here is a link to the CHP's Metro FSP web site: http://www.chp.net/fsp.htm.

The only other thing I can think of is that it might be a CHP unit that patrols the city (metro) portion of the freeway or highway of that town or city. But I doubt it, it is probably the FSP; and most probably not a unit patrolling the unincorporated areas or areas without freeways.

Where I live (LAPD-ville), a Metro Unit is part of a police division (Metro Division) that concentrates on specific or major crimes (e.g. crime suppression, repeat offenders, criminal predators, etc.). Also, the SWAT Teams, Mounted Units (horse), and K9 Units are part of Metro Division (http://www.lapdonline.org/organization/oo/sob/metro/metro_division.htm). However, in Los Angeles County, Metro is also the name of the bus and train/rail system (MTA - Metropolitan Transportation Authority) and the police/sheriffs assigned to them and the FSP tow trucks contracted by the MTA (http://www.mta.net/projects_programs/fsp/fsp.htm).

Wikipedia defenition of metropolitan (metro; metropolis): A metropolitan area is a large population center consisting of a large city and its adjacent zone of influence, or of several neighboring cities or towns and adjoining areas, with one or more large cities serving as its hub or hubs.

Remember the song, The Metro, by Berlin?

Hope this helps - probably a lot more info than you wanted. ;)

It's NOT FSP. FSP here in Sacto has their own dispatcher and channel on the County TRS. I guess I should narrow the question to "What is a "Metro" unit in the Sac area". And I'm only asking about CHP Metro units...not other agencies which might have a "metro" designation...such as "Sac Metro Fire"...

You can always register at this site and ask that question http://chpforums.com/ Many of the people on the site are CHP Officers that I chat with all the time

I've seen the same lists for the CHP tacticals for years. It would really be appreciated if someone posts the correct list one of these days.

Yeah Roln the guys on the site are really nice to chat with and have answered a lot of questions for me about the CHP over the last few months that I've been a member.

A Metro unit in Sac is one of the "downtown" cars. We were tooling around on I5 and I80 right in downtown, and west of the I5/80 interchange and on the surface streets just north of downtown. Had Sac PD cover on a 10851 vehicle on 80 WB west of the 5/80 interchange, so we had to still be in the city...I'm not sure of exact beat area that Metro encompasses, however. Our callsign was Metro 48, btw.

I'm pretty sure that part of Hwy 50 and/or Hwy 99 beat east/south of downtown are Metro cars also...

I wondered if there was a patrol beat between Metro and South Sac, Metro and North Sac etc. I don't think there is, but I'm not sure.

(Darth Choke is squared away...got sent down to LA from the "A" a year or two ago...he's on some other related forums.)

The Capitol cars get out on the freeway too...well, they're the 300 cars, and they're on the UHF for the Capitol...don't know what their policy allows, though. They might be able to cover some of the downtown interchange areas as well.

Well I know I got these either from this forum or one of the local scanning websites but I can't remember exactly where. I appologize if parts of it are still wrong but I suppose it's better than nothing, and hey TAC 6 matches the earlier description.

CHP Tactical Channels:

Base: Mobile:
---------------------------------
Tac 1: 45.02 42.26
Tac 2: 39.42 42.06
Tac 3: 45.94 42.10
Tac 4: 39.92 42.28
Tac 5: -- Unknown if there is one, my list skips to 6 --
Tac 6: 45.06 42.38
Tac 7: 42.08 (Unknown possibly simplex)
Tac 8: 39.14 42.22

Does anyone know what if any PL tones are used on these freqs? For instance, I've been assuming that CHP officers in the Bay Area would be using the same Golden Gate Divison PL tone of 131.8 as the dispatch channels, but I was wondering if someone could verify that as I've yet to hear any activity on Tac 6 from here in the north bay.
