Hello all,

As you all know CHP is installing the CPVE in most of their cars. I was fortunate to ride in one two nigts ago and saw this system first hand and how its operates. It was very cool!!

My question is: does anyone now of a software that resembles the CPVE for consumer use. I would love to impliment this in my house to control all of my scanners and whatnot. Possibly installing something to this degree in my truck to control the am/fm radio, backupcameras, scanners and cb/two way radios

I know it can get expensive, but hit me with it, ive found nothing of the sort online, I may just have to create a software myself if I cant find a solution :)

Thanks in advance

Googling "home automation" is a good place to start. There are all kinds of touchscreen remote control units for the rich and famous to control their home theaters and lighting. Since they're user programmable I see no reason why you couldn't control scanners with one.

Thanks for the reply indigo, I have searched home automation and actually run automation in my home, Im intertested mainly in something for my truck, id like to have the computer instant on when I turn my truck on and some other things, just trying to get an idea right now of whats out there. If it can run the scanners in the house too, that would just be a bonus

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm reasonably certain that a driver-accessible terminal would violate vehicle code in California...

Well since most police cars in CA are equipped with driver-accessible computers, that would make them all illegal. I doubt it.

Not wrong at all actually. California Vehicle Code section 27602.

As for why police cars can get away with it, well it's simple, the law includes: "(c) Subdivision (a) does not apply to a mobile digital terminal installed in an authorized emergency vehicle"

The system does look rather interesting though!

You're not wrong but CVC 27602 (c) exempts emergency vehicles and tow trucks from the general 27602 prohibition. Subsection (d) also exempts certain utility company vehicles (gas, electricity, water, sewage, etc) when they're responding to utility-related emergencies.

CA Codes (veh:27600-27607)

University of New Hampshire came out with "Project54" years before the CHP package and is being used in areas of New England and some New York agencies.

MobileFleet sells the commerical version with some enhancements and refinements.

There is/was an available demo download from the UNH site.

Motorola had a program called vRCH that was bundled with the MW520, MW800 and ML900 computers that allowed remote controlled operation of SB9600 based radios, but has not been supported for quite some time. Each radio needed a mini-rib (which they also use to sell cheap, but no longer). It worked with the Spectra, ASTRO Spectra, MCS2000 and a couple of other radios.

I wonder if it could be considered a "vehicle information display?" Or add GPS or mapping capability to it. Make darn sure there is no video entertainment or IM / texting option. Even then it might be too much of a stretch to convince a skeptical cop.

(b) Subdivision (a) does not apply to the following equipment when
installed in a vehicle:
(1) A vehicle information display.
(2) A global positioning display.
(3) A mapping display.
(4) A visual display used to enhance or supplement the driver's
view forward, behind, or to the sides of a motor vehicle for the
purpose of maneuvering the vehicle.
