I am still hearing traffic on the old 154.905 mobile extenders. Does anyone know if divisions are still going to use this frequency for future. Does the new portable digital 700 MHz digital radios have the old extender freq. prog. Into it ? Or am I hearing some of the last few units before they transition into the new band ?

I suspect "last few units." The CHP has until 12-31-12 to retire all of the existing (wideband) 154 MHz equipment.

I have an HT1000 that is programmed for narrowband (same as CHPs). Why couldn't they reprogram the vehicles as narrow by 12/31 and carry on until all vehicles are upgraded?

Spoke with two officers from the Barstow office yesterday. They say they ONLY get new radios with new cars (they have a mix of old and new radios presently). They were also told they are not getting any more new cars for a while. Therefore, they will continue to use old radios and new ones depending on which vehicle they use for the day (like they were yesterday) after the cutoff date. So... either someone from state radio is going to drop by Barstow and swap out several vehicle radios this month (doubt it), OR, someone is going to reprogram somehow for narrowband (maybe but not if the above is true about the vehicle repeaters), OR they will simply risk an FCC fine...

The vehicular repeater units won't narrowband.

I know this thread is a little dated and my info/question is not exactly dealing with the LA and inland areas BUT it has to do with K6CDO's statement above. I am still hearing the VHF extender traffic where I am in north San Diego County as of tonight (1/2/2013). If those units really can't be narrowbanded then I am guessing the state got a waiver from the FCC to continue to use them OR ...? This is now past the last deadline so...

Any thoughts? Anybody else still hearing the old VHF extenders in other areas?
