Since a lot of this stuff is CHP-specific, or designed as a result of CHP demand, I wouldn't be surprised if they are paying through the nose for it so that manufacturers can recover development costs.

I'm also interested in the "$6,000 mobile repeater" listed.

That's the 700 MHz VRS system, that's actually not a bad price from that system. I'm not sure why they can't reuse the one already in the vehicles though. They may be somewhat old but they are not so old that they should need to be replaced.

The NX-5xxx series radios when run in a multi-RF stack setup will do mobile repeat internally without any additional equipment. Only time it wouldn't work for them would be trying to repeat a 700/800 channel, but their portables can talk on those systems without a VRS in most cases.

Maybe I'm missing something, though.

Are the NX-5xxx series radios available in low band? If so mobile repeat of low band analog to 700 P25 would work for them.

Yes, the APX-8000 portable should be able to talk directly on everything except low band as well.

Yes, NX-5600H is the 110w low band deck. With a multiple RF deck setup, it will currently handle up to two more RF decks, so adding VHF high and a 7/800 deck would do the trick. An interconnecting cable between the DB-25's on the back of the RF decks will let it do a mobile repeat function.

This would be a possible option for them. Although I would go with low band, UHF (or a VHF/UHF dual band if available), 7/800 being that CHP has infrastructure in place on those bands.

It's my understanding that CHP wants in car VHF/UHF/700/800 interoperability with other departments as well as a separate in car system for CHP low band with a full duplex repeater system for the portables to connect to the CHP low band system, and possibly the interop system. The point being that I believe they want to maintain connection with the CHP system while also having a interoperability connection at the same time.

No dual band decks.
Low VHF (39-50)
High VHF
Low UHF (380-470)
High UHF (450-520)
700-800

Not much need for a High UHF deck, so they could easily cover everything with 4 decks. Currently, the Kenwood version only does 3 decks, however the EF Johnson version (same radio, different software) will do 4 RF decks.
So, entirely possible Kenwood could do a 4 RF deck solution and solve all the issues.

Or, just do a 3 RF deck, VHF High, UHF, 7/800 and keep the Low band deck separate. But still, I don't see $6000 in a VRS. I can build out a 3 RF deck single head NX-5000 for less than $5K.

Should be interesting to see what they (and Kenwood) do. I have seen that a high power UHF deck is coming, so 100+ watts on VHF Low, VHF High and UHF is possible. Standard 35 watt 7/800 deck.

I have seen and got to play with a 3 deck setup. VERY NICE...drool.

Yeah, they're pretty impressive.
I was pricing one out today for my work truck. VHF, UHF and 7/800 deck with a single full feature control head. With NASPO pricing, it's pretty reasonable. Quite a bit cheaper than Motorola, and more features.

Will be interesting to see what CHP actually ends up installing. I know the low band deck was designed with CHP in mind. In fact, I was told that the decision to produce it was based on the CHP contract. I'll have to track down my Kenwood rep and see if he has anything to add.

Have you played with it?

It's quite underwhelming. The entire radio setup is strictly devoted to internal repeat, you cannot use the front microphone or panel, and to exit requires a reboot.

For it to be of any value, the internal repeat needs to be reengineered.

The VRS system can change channels based on the NAC it receives as well, even different RF bands.

Haven't used it yet. We're only using the NX-5700's. I've talked to people that have used it. I know Pyramid had an external box with interfaces for multiple RF decks, but I haven't see it other than at IWCE.

Yeah, that's what I recall about the CHP setup. Still trying to figure out how that comes up to $6K.

I have the mobile relay setup in one of my dual bands, I’m not ordering it for the next one I do. I’ll reuse my SVR250.
