CHP officers working longer days, shorter weeks
Some California Highway Patrol officers and sergeants began working new schedules this week.
CHP spokesperson Fran Clader tells KCRA 3 that since this past Monday, some officers have switched to three 12.5 hour days per week.
Clader says the idea is to reduce overtime expenses and improve quality of life for CHP employees. Before making the change, the agency commissioned a study to examine the benefits and drawbacks.
Officers in each CHP patrol area then voted on whether to make the schedule change. Officers had to vote at least 80 percent in favor for the change to be implemented. Clader says 80 of the state's more than 100 patrol areas approved the new schedules.
The new schedule does not apply to non-uniformed employees, managers at CHP headquarters, and some rural areas.
Officers working the new three day schedule will also work one extra day a month, so as to equal the total number of hours under the current work schedule.
