Does CHP operate on the County - Imperial County Regional Communications System (RCS)? They have talk groups listed as Dispatch on there. Just wondering if these posts use this radio system rather than the normal old analog primary VHF low band radio system. Thank you!!!

Yes, El Cajon uses the RCS almost exclusively. I still monitor 39.6 but I rarely hear anything there. The CHP TGs on RCS are quite busy. It is nice to be ale to hear the units working I-8 in the mountains like they are local when there is a winter storm out there. The other night I was listening to one unit describing white out conditions between Crestwood and Pine Valley.
Great, do you know if they use digital portables? Sometimes they try (like my State used to) before they realized it didn't work so well wth different audio types being patched together) Sometimes the'll try to get away with analog portables repeated to the digital system through the in car mobile... are these the only CHP posts that are digital? Thanks so much again!

Sorry, I don't know what kind of portables the El Cajon units are using. The state is rolling out a new vehicular repeater system that uses P25 portables. I have heard some of the local cruisers using the new system but I haven't heard anyone confirm it's use for the EC cruisers yet.
The El Cajon Area is operating on the RCS. There are some radios assigned in the Division, Oceanside, and San Diego offices.
The majority of CHP talkgroups are digital. CHP El Cajon has been using XTS-5000 hand held radios and is transitioning to the EFJohnson 5100-ES hand held radios coming into use statewide.

CHP Valley Division is using the new 700MHz mobile extenders in digital mode going into their VHF-Lo analog legacy frequencies. In listening to the VHF-Lo system it is easy to tell when a unit is on their extender or on the car radio. There is a hollow "tinny" sound to the digital audio as it comes out on VHF-Lo. So far that is the only difference I have heard and the units are readable on the digital extenders.
