Just wondering if any of you other guys' local agencies put out any "interesting" Christmas messages on Christmas eve?

One local one here in western NC puts out a BOLO for a jolly fat man in a red sleigh driven by 8 reindeer every year...

Another one just broadcasts a Merry Christmas message to friends and families and citizens of the county "monitoring" , every year.

Then there are random vehicle stops of Kris Kringle and other things that I hear yearly.

I personally love it and hope the tradition continues forever.

When it was around new years during a patrol ride along one of the dispatchers came on the radio at 00:00 and said Happy New Year and gave a cheer... first time i heard a dispatcher do that without getting in trouble lol

Cleveland County does one every year and goes over the the EMS, FD, and SO Dispatch channels. Starts off as a suspicious vehicle call, then deputy's arrive on scene and get out with a fat man, his license gets ran along with his sleigh tag. The jolly man has a long list violations including miss use of a red light! He always gets off with a warning and the county wish's everyone a Merry Christmas! Seems like the broadcast starts at 8:00 pm.

Merry Christmas!

1) I have a close buddy who is a Sgt at a Wake County Police Dept. A few years ago he had to work the overnight shift on Christmas Morning. He decided that since he had to work that shift he was gonna make it memorable. Having been tipped off in advance I heard the following radio exchange around 2am:
Sgt= "8112D Raleigh signal 10 (vehicle stop)".
Dispatcher= "Go ahead 8112D".
Sgt= "Red vehicle unknown make or model. You ready for the plate?"
Dispatcher= "Go ahead".
Sgt= "S-Sam, A-Adam, N-Nora, T-Tom, A-Adam. Alaska plate."
Long pause from dispatcher. Finally laughter heard in background of next transmission.
Dispatcher= "8112D, I have been advised that you need to let that vehicle off with a warning and provide an escort to the city line".
Sgt= "Will do Raleigh. Merry Christmas!"
Dispatcher= "Back to you 8112D".

2) I had a tradition I did for many years. Before Garner (Wake Co) Police started using CADs/MCTs/MDTs in their squads the officers would have to radio in for the report number and time of each call. So at the end of each call you would hear the officer ask for "Time and Number". Time being call time and Number being report number. Well, for many years I would tape the overnight shift on December 31st-January 1st. Reason being is that you could hear the Report number for the last call of the previous year and hear the first report number of the 1st call of the new year. It became a tradition of mine to capture this info for many reasons. I could see how man total calls the PD had been on in the last year. It was also cool to hear what type of incident would get the 1st report number of the new year. I still have some years on cassette. I am gonna work on getting them transferred to mp3 and stored online. Just one of those little traditions that was fun to have. Now of course report numbers are sent over MDTs so that tradition has been retired.

Happy Holidays to all!

There have been a few random traffic stops, and even the occasional santa impersonator in Asheville.... but that shouldn't be a surprise for a city like Ashevegas.
I know exactly what you mean Marshall, Henderson Co. EMS announces their run numbers once the EMS unit goes enroute, so I've had my scanner parked on the dispatch channel for the past couple of new years to listen to "You're run number is one, that is zero zero zero oneeee."

Transylvania Sheriff & Brevard Police just did a full code 3 "chase" of a red sleigh with everything from a personallized plate check, to a license check, after ending at walmart. Kris Kringle could be heard ho ho hoing in the background wishing everyone a merry Christmas. County put on quite a show tonight, I'll have to try and record it next year if I remember.

Haywood Sheriff has been running a few "Kris Kringles", "Saint Nicks," and a few "Clause" personnal plates tonight as well.

Last Night

I had one already prepared to give out last night, it involved a prowler on the roof of the Police Dept but we stayed busy up until 5:30 this morning, we had domestics, fights and assaults all last night. Went to one house 4 times. Unfortunately, that has been the typical Christmas Eve for the last several years. I was able to get an announcement out for the Fire Dept though, due to the fact that the North Pole Fire Dept Engine 1 was out on a special assignment, we were providing move-up coverage. Companies needed to put chains on their trucks and prepare for frozen hydrants. At least next year I'm off for the holidays.

Thats about how Greensboro was last night i was able to hear something out of 1 dispatch channel about a 10-37(suspicious vehicle) last seen in a red sleigh subject described as a jolly man in red suit last seen from the Virgina border line last heard saying merry Christmas to all and to all a good night. Unfortunately that was the only thing heard from one dispatch channel before they started having robberies, foot pursuit, and vehicle pursuits.

I dont know if this is relevant to add but i was going to rockingham county last night or ACTUALLY this morning around 3am. Burlington PD dispatch was requesting mutual aid between all law enforcement agencies code 3, its only twice i heard a code 3 M/A request at a local waffle house, I guess someone didnt like how their eggs were cooked and took it out on someone then it all became a big ruckus, Graham and Sheriff were rolling as you can hear that crown vic roar in the background.

Thats just my piece of action I heard before I left alamance county this morning.

Well that had nothing to do with the posted topic of Christmas bolos.

Anyway to get back on topic, I heard Burke Co doing their and it was actually pretty neat. It was updates from NORAD on the positioning of Santa up until midnight , when Santa's arrival was imminent.

Caldwell Co. had the traditional attempt to locate Santa bolo and one officer stopping him with one giving backup. The neat thing of this one was that the officers cleared and Santa advised them that he would be standing by until all the children were in their beds. Pretty neat twist.

I looked forward to these little antics every year when I was on the job. Still cool to find neat little new twists are being used every year.
