How strange! Not to minimise ZL2TAW's warm fuzzy glow having received CHU on 7850 and congrats to you, but I have no trouble receiving him and getting good copy on the male voice too in the evening. Perhaps just a slight adjustment (relatively!) in geographic location has a marked effect on propagation. Mind you, I am in a very quiet area RF noise-wise and my 50foot (short) longwire does roughly point towards Canada.

I don't know Martin-I personally think given where you guys are and CHU's abysmal signal at only 10,000 watts that barely makes it here on a regular basis-I thought it was impressive. Tha vast majority of DXs I have gotten at that distance were at least 50,000 watts

If it's hard to hear at your location, then it's a good catch! They are always loud here. On a good day, I can even hear them on 3330khz at high noon, usually in the winter

Now that is impressive! 9522 miles from you. Tough catch even from here.
Hmm...it's faint here in Central California as well. Now I don't feel to bad about my Grundig G5 and it's performance. I've got all kinds of noise here though and I live under high power lines.

This led me to my first long range (is it?) listen!

Sure is (I'm in San Francisco, CA), but as a new SW Listener this post helped me figure out how to work the SSB BFO dial on my Tecsun PL660 as I knew there would be a good chance I could hear CHU if you could, and you mentioned using USB. I could just about make it out and it spurred me on to look around further and I managed to catch Radio Cubana on 6125kHz at 0639z last night just after I heard CHU!

Here's where Ridgescan calls me out for a bigger radio shopping spree than I have admitted to in threads about VHF air band listening... :p

Bayou State....

Hi,

Where I used to live, in Shreveport, LA (up near the Ark-La-Tex northwest
corner of Louisiana) I used to hear CHU on 3 mHz and 7 mhz. We just moved
to Lakeview, Louisiana, near Blanchard, LA and I haven't had the chance to
hang any sky hooks up yet. Soon as I can, I'm going to hook-up some #14,
solid copper, insulated wire up to 30 feet off the ground and running about
400 feet long, then a 90º turn to the left for 50 feet, another 90º left turn
and another 300 feet along the other fence and still 30 feet high

Are they still making the dual language (English & French) announcements?
Sounds like the announcer tape was saying "earl no mah drad, then I could
not understand him, LOL!

GOD BLESS,
73,

If I'm not mistaken, I could hear BOTH signals from Shreveport when I had my old
Hallicrafters S-120, LOL! That receiver was a "piece of work"... no insulated power
supply. If you touched the metal case, you got 'shocked'. I don't remember if I
threw it away or not. The filter capacitor went "bad" and I got this 60 cycle "buzz"
making it impossible to copy short-wave stations.

Back when I was "little" was in the early 1950's, LOL!

GOD BLESS,
Regards,

Don/KA5LQJ
